1bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice
WhenMay--June 2010, 1 month LocationThe location has advantages and disadvantages. The street is a very busy street for pedestrian traffic -- not as busy as San Marco, but still busy. The grammar school is right down the block and in the morning and afternoons there are lots of children and young families in transit. There is also a bar (coffee) and a restaurant right across the calle, which stay open late. All of these factors make for lots of great people watching entertainment but also, noise. The distance from vaporetto stops -- five to 10 minutes walk. I loved the feeling of the neighborhood; it's much less "touristy" than many other areas. Nearby AmenitiesMany many choices of eating places within 10 minutes walk. The best coffee in Venice is right across the calle at Bar La Trichetta. Bigger grocery stores: COOP about a four minute walk, Billa, seven minutes. Great bakery right around the corner. The House/ApartmentI really don't know if there's any historical significance to the building but everyday I saw someone taking a photo of it. There are one or two other apartments in the building. You enter through a common hallway and then there's a locked door to the terrace. From the terrace you walk into the living/dining/kitchen area. Bathroom to the left, bedroom to the right. You can view the property directly: Balcony in SS.Giovanni e Paolo Square. GardenSitting or standing on the private terrace watching the world go by -- priceless! There is a plastic table and chairs out there for eating, too. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasFurniture was all in great shape and everything was spotless, immaculately clean. There is a sofa in the living room but no other chairs except for the six dining room chairs. Bedrooms/BathroomsBathroom is small but totally functional. Shower, very small but not terrible. Good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The mattress is a little old; it sags in the center a bit but not so bad. KitchenKitchen worked great. The four burner stove top is good but the oven was out of order. I got the feeling it would soon be repaired or replaced but I said I had no plans to use an oven. I cooked quite a few times on the stove top. Pots, pans, dishes and utensils were plentiful. Problems or BonusesNo real surprises except the noise. If we closed the windows and shutters it was a lot quieter. Staying there a month gave us time to get used to hearing the chorus of "Ciaos" in the morning and it got to be pleasant for me. Agency and Representatives (and price)Sabrina, the owner was delightful. Her English is excellent and she was completely responsive to our needs. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We loved the space and the location. The only caveat is the noise factor. I would probably stay there again because we loved the neighborhood so much.
