Review 4699: Le Manzinaie, Girasole

Review by jeffrey from berkeley from CA

apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South

June/July 2010, one week

Le Manzinaie is conveniently located on a country road in between the hill towns of Montepulciano and Cortona. Smaller, less well-known towns of Valiano, Staziaone Montepulciano, and Aqua Viva are located nearer to Le Manzinaie and were used by our family for shopping, laundry, and restaurants on evenings when we wanted to remain closer to home. There are no other properties within site of Le Manzinaie, and when you are on the property, you feel private from the road and other buildings. You are NOT in a city. The surrounding countryside is among the most beautiful I've ever seen.

Nearby Amenities

To get goods for your apartment, you need to drive. Our apartment had most of the amenities upon our arrival -- coffee, tea, bread, milk, juice, water, wine. And the property has an abundance of fruits and vegetables for the guests; it is an operating farm still. We rarely needed to leave the property for amenities.

The House/Apartment

The building is a beautifully restored farmhouse. The walls were super-thick, and the apartment stayed cool on even the hottest days. The interior is decorated by tasteful murals and comfortable furniture. The bathroom are spacious and equipped with modern and efficient fixtures. Our apartment had a private garden with a table and chairs which we used for breakfasts and dinner on lovely evenings. The rooms have fans and the windows are fully screened. There was on other apartment near, but the thick walls prevented us from hearing the other guests. Across the garden was a detached unit, but it was blocked from our view by tall hedges. I'm not sure how many rental unites there are on the property, but I think there are five. We stayed in the Girasole, which was one of the non-air-conditioned units, but we never felt the need.

Each unit has its own private garden, which we used for breakfasts and dinners. The grounds are very large and just beautiful. The owners have taken immense pride in the place, and it is evident when you walk the grounds. There are ponds, a fruit orchard, vegetable gardens, patios, a barbecue, and a large, lovely pool that we used every day. The pool has comfortable deck chairs and umbrellas. The hosts graciously brought us drinks in the afternoons while we lounged.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Our apartment was spacious. All the furniture was comfortable and appropriate style for the place. Most importantly, the beds had great mattresses. We all slept well each night. The kitchen is small but usable. It had all the dishes we needed to cook with. There is not an automatic dishwasher. There was good light for reading. The rooms were clean and neat.

Yes, the beds were wonderful. There were two bathrooms. The bathroom in the room with the large bed was spacious. The bathroom attached to the room with the double beds was not as large, but it was adequate.

The kitchen is small but usable. It had all the dishes we needed to cook with. We cooked all breakfasts in the kitchen. The stove-top is small, but it worked to cook dinners for four.

Problems or Bonuses

No bad surprises. The good was how wonderful our hosts were. You had as much privacy as you wanted, but if you had any questions or problems, Marzia, Fioro, or Alice was there to help. And we had a problem when I smashed by rest-a-car in Montepulciano. They were quick to do everything necessary to get the mess cleaned up and get us out on the road again to see the sites. They took what was an upsetting event and made it better so we could continue enjoying the region.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked through Le Manzianie using email. All was done easily and efficiently. English is spoken. All that I had read about Le Manzinaie seemed too good to be true. It was all true. In fact, it exceeded expectations.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

No doubt, if we ever head back to the area, we will be staying at Le Manzinaie.

Things to do in this area

There's too much to recommend.
