Review 4706: Gorgacce Rentals, Villa Forconi

Review by patti08 from UK

3(or4)bed/4bath house near Tuoro, Umbria

July 2010, 1 week

Located in the hills overlooking the Niccone valley, you take a turning off the road Tuoro to Mercantale and villa is up a gravel road. There are houses on that road but the villa stands alone with entrance by locked gate. Beautiful area with great views from the villa especially the sunrise. Lots of trails around too.

Nearby Amenities

Had to drive to Tuoro where there are bigger stores or Mercantale or Lisciano for local stores for supplies and restaurants although there is a restaurant where you turn off for the villa, Lo Scoiattolo.

The House/Apartment

Fantastic villa well renovated with three double en suite bedrooms upstairs all with a living area included. Two bedrooms had mezzanine floors with steep access which might be a problem for older people. The master bedroom was huge with shower on one level and a bath access by a few stone stairs. Downstairs there was another en suite bedroom or sitting room with access for disabled with sofa bed. We didn't use this as a bedroom so can't comment on how comfortable it was. All other beds were so comfortable and we all slept well. There was no air conditioning but fans in the bedrooms. The rooms were large and cool although when we were there it was hotter than normal and we did use our fan but I use a fan in the UK as I do feel the heat so that may not be an objective comment.

The kitchen was enormous with every appliance you could need and so well equipped with crockery, pans utensils and herbs. spices, balsamic and olive oil, The reception rooms were beautifully furnished with great art work and ornaments. A truly lovely home for us to share in peaceful surroundings.

You can view the property directly: Villa Forconi.

The garden was huge and informal. We saw so many swallowtail butterflies all around the lavender. There were several sitting areas and tables so there was always somewhere to sit in sun or shade. The pool was ours alone with lots of sun loungers, fluffy towels and a huge chair to laze in in the pool. It was really fantastic. There was also a barbie with all fuel and lighters plus all essential utensils.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

It was spotless and everything of the highest quality. We were met by the housekeeper on arrival and given all relevant information.

The bedrooms were excellent, well appointed with comfortable beds and sofas and the bathrooms were spotless and lovely. There were insects netting on all necessary windows. All rooms had their own facilities abd one had a small terrace with a table and two chairs which overlooked the pool. The other two had tiny terraces as well but no furniture.

Kitchen was just out of this world, really huge with everything you could need. We cooked as often as we could as my son in law loves cooking. He was in his element. There was a huge table in the dining area which we used at night to avoid any mossies (aka mosquitoes) but you could eat outside too. We had lovely Italian lunches on the beautiful table outside the dining room.

Problems or Bonuses

Villa was even better than we thought from the website. We knew access might be a little difficult the first time but we followed the instructions to the letter and there were no problems. After that it was so easy. We had two cars as we had come from different directions but mostly we all went out together in the bigger car. There were two couples and a single.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

All very efficient. The housekeeper and family spoke excellent English and we could phone if we had a problem for help and advice.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would go back tomorrow. Would love to spend a whole season here spring, summer or autumn. As it was so hot around 40 degrees it was difficult with the sightseeing although we did do quite a lot. We would have loved to walk in the area and in fact my daughter did run every day but it was just too hot for me to do that. So it was brilliant to have such a lively villa to use and enjoy.

Things to do in this area

There is a lovely small bakery in Mercantale, which we used a lot. We went to the restaurant Lo Scoiattolo, which has good local food and a lovely terrace with views of Lake Trasimeno. Our favourite restaurant was Gianna in Liscano Niccone which is family run using their own fare. Daily hand-written menus. Outside tables all very rustic with delicious food.

We went to Siena, Florence, Cortona, Gubbio, Montepulciano - all very accessible from the villa. We drove to all these places and had no trouble parking.
