Review 4822: Aretusa Vacanze B&B, Apartment

Review by Erain from WA

1bed/1bath apartment in Siracusa, Sicily

October 2010, 1 week

Down near the tip of Ortigia, a block from the Fontana Aretusa and not far from the Castle. We never had any problems finding parking for the rental car nearby.

Nearby Amenities

The nearest small grocery was just two blocks away, but you'd be better off walking up to the far end of Ortigia (not that far really) to the morning market.

The nearest restaurant just outside the door, Da Mariano, is just wonderful!

The House/Apartment

I had trouble deciding whether to list this as a B&B or apartment review, but decided to go with apartment since we actually had a kitchen area (fridge, stove, pots & pans etc) and our bedroom was in a separate location from the kitchen and "living room." The room we stayed in came with breakfast included (really nice) but our friends' room (also with a separate kitchen space, plus a small balcony) did not so you could pick whichever method you prefer.

On the roof outside the breakfast room is a nice sunny terrace with beautiful views of the sea and back across Siracusa.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were fine. There was a tiny breakfast table and enough chairs that four of us could sit around and play cards/scrabble. The sofa was a futon that could clearly be unfolded for a third person to sleep on, but that would have taken away the living room space.

The mattress a bit firm for this spoiled American. There was a side table with a laptop so you could access the Internet! The bathroom was fine.

It was small but functional kitchenette, with pots pans strainers etc. should you want to make a simple meal. There was not enough tableware to entertain, but that's fine; our friends just brought their wineglasses down from their room. Oh the refrigerator doubled as a mini-bar so there was always bottled water (necessary!) or wine if you ran out.

Problems or Bonuses

There turned out to be an elevator for reaching rooms on the higher floors, which was a nice bonus we hadn't expected.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Everyone at the B&B was so nice, especially Antonio who gave us so much helpful information.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

In a heartbeat. This was my favorite lodging in Sicily!

Things to do in this area

Da Mariano next door was fabulous!

Caffe Minerva up near the Duomo was a wonderful place to sit and have a glass of wine or a coffee in the afternoon. Also near the Duomo, La Gazza Ladra was a wonderful little enoteca to sample lots of local wines with good food so you could walk home again afterward.

The morning street market was so full of tasty treats. You must get the sun-dried cherry tomatoes!
