Review 4842: Owner, Balcony SS Giovanni e Paolo Square (#4452)

Review by LoveVenice from Missouri

1bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice

View from balcony into campo S.S. Giovanni e Paolo, photo by self

October 2010, One week

The location of this apartment was wonderful! The apartment is located in the Cannaregio district, just at the border into the Castello district, which starts in the S.S. Giovanni e Paolo square. The front door was off of a bridge which goes into the square, the only door on the bridge. So as we walked in and out, we were constantly greeted with an amazing view into the square. The location is convenient to shops, restaurants and getting to other areas of the city. It also has a real neighborhood feel to it.

Nearby Amenities

Everything is in walking distance. There are some smaller stores in the area, lots of cafès for sandwiches and coffee and several grocery stores within a few minutes' walk (the Suve in San Lio, the Billa in Strada Nuova or the Coop either near San Lio or the Giorgione theater.) and some very good restaurants in the area. I was delighted to be staying so close to Da Alberto. I also liked the well-stocked hardware store, which is in front of Da Alberto!

The House/Apartment

This apartment is a gem and you can see that from the beginning you unlock the front door. It's very special to be entering off the bridge and the experience gets more special as you then enter the long and lovely terrace. This takes you to the front door of the apartment, which is located on the first floor. The view from that terrace into the life of Venice is priceless. I loved watching the Venetian life each day, from the kids walking to school, to the cafès opening, to the activity in the square just in front of the apartment. I also loved breathing in that imposing facade from the S.S. Giovanni e Paolo church, I was so close it felt like I could touch it.

There are three apartments in the building. One is next to the one I stayed in and the owners are only there occasionally. The other apartment is above ours and I never heard those owners, though I think they were there because I could see their open windows.

There is a terrace that runs almost the length of the apartment. It's a great place to enjoy drinks or a meal and while I was there in October with some pretty nice weather, I could see spending significant amounts of time there during the warmer months.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment felt like home! It was clean, comfortable and well-stocked with everything we needed. The closest space in the bedroom is impressive! So many drawers and cubbies, shelves and hanging spaces. We could potentially unpack for a longer stay and I loved that! The bed was comfortable as was the couch, which is also a pull-out bed. There is a large kitchen table in the eat-in kitchen and it was fun for both of us to be in the kitchen area while we prepared dinner. I really felt at home in this apartment!

The bathroom was lovely, such beautiful tiling on the floors and walls. The shower had lots of hot water and excellent water pressure. The bed was very comfortable and was conducive to good sleep.

The kitchen was stocked full of everything we needed. There were sharp knives, a vast assortment of pots and pans, utensils, glasses, everything we looked for was in reach and we were able to utilize many fresh ingredients from the Rialto to make some delicious meals. I loved cooking here and definitely, the space is a good one for cooking full meals. The kitchen table comfortably seats six, so it would be especially convenient for a larger group.

Problems or Bonuses

I had no idea how much I would be taken with the view from the terrace! It was breathtaking and just beautiful and I feel so fortunate we had some gorgeous autumn days to experience it.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

When I found this apartment online (thanks to SlowTrav!), I communicated directly with Sabrina, the owner. She is just as lovely online as she is in person and she was prompt in answering my emails. This used to be her home and I can tell that all of the thoughtful touches are in place because she used to live here. The real rental far exceeded my expectations and the photos on the website (and the one I am going to attach) just don't do this wonderful property justice. It is hard to capture the magic that awaits you from the terrace, it's just beautiful.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes!! We loved staying here and would only think of renting this apartment again in the future, it allowed us to feel at home while we were in Venice.

Things to do in this area

Visiting the S.S. Giovanni e Paolo church is a must, as is enjoying coffee at Rosa Salva in the same square. The Miracoli church is nearby as is the Santa Maria Formosa church. Near each of these churches are small neighborhoods with their own shops which merit exploring. We were also so close to Fondamenta Nove and could easily take the boat to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
