4bed/3bath villa near Todi, Umbria WhenJan. 2002 and March 2001, one week each time LocationLe Rondini is in the country - very quiet, very private even though there are a few houses nearby. The view is absolutely spectacular, a vista of farmland, then the hilltop medieval town of Todi in the distance, and beyond that mountains. Le Rondini is high up on a hill itself, so the view is wide and spectacular. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and peaceful, with several lovely walks right there. Nearby AmenitiesYou cannot walk to any amenitites. The town of Todi, the nearest center for anything, is about a 15 minute drive away. The House/ApartmentThe house is a very old stone farmhouse that has been redone very recently as a single family home. It has been beautifully restored with the highest quality materials and with simple but extremely comfortable and pleasing design. The rooms are large, well-furnished, and absolutely delightful. There are lovely antique dressers and beds, modern comfortable sofas and chairs, a large dining table, a fireplace iin the dining room and one in the library. GardenThere is a very large private outdoor area: a terrace for dining, a garden, a fabulous pool that looks out on the fabulous view (I was there in the winter so didn't go in the pool, but it is obviously terrific), an orchard of olive and other fruit trees, etc. There are shady pergolas and lots of sun. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe house was sparkling clean, extremely comfortable, with plenty of seating and dining. The basic feeling throughout is that the house is solid as a rock (it is in fact stone) and yet very comfortable. Bedrooms/BathroomsBeds were excellent. There are three bathrooms, all upstairs, each large and modern but at the same time, like the kitchen, done with a tasteful rustic simplicity. The very large master bedroom has a private balcony that looks out over the fabulous view. The bedroom that is down a short flight of stairs from the second floor is doubly private and also enjoys the view. The other two bedrooms are spacious and the view from their windows, while not as stunningly amazing, is perfectly beautiful. KitchenThe kitchen is a cook's delight -- well equipped with all implements and a great restaurant-style stove. All new applicances, good lighting, yet a rustic decor. Altogether I have nothing but great memories of cooking in the kitchen, and I am a serious cook. There is a washer and dryer and a large clothes line. Problems or BonusesNo -- the surprise was the loveliness of it all. Agency and Representatives (and price)I found this house through friends, so did not use an agency. Note from SlowTrav: The owner has a web site for the house, Rent Le Rondini but it is booked through Italian Vacation Villas, a SlowTrav Favorite agency: www.villasitalia.com. The American owner of this villa is a regular on our Slow Talk message board. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? No qualifications. I would recommend this house to anyone who does not mind driving to get supplies. Any inconvience is outweighed by the loveliness of the setting and delights of the house itself. Things to do in this areaLe Rondini is located in an area of many famous sights within easy driving distance -- Orvieto, Perugia, Deruta, Assissi, etc. as well as small towns to explore. Todi itself is a terrific town, a great place to shop and to have an espresso. There is a supermarket on the outskirts of town and small shops, cafes, and bakeries in town. There are great small churches to visit and hilly, winding medieval streets to wander. Todi is large enough to feel bustling but compact enough to feel small. It is true that I have not been there in the summer, so I cannot speak to how crowded it gets in that season. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
