Review 493: Sant' Antonio, Apartment
apartments on estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South
June 2002, one week
Sant'Antonio was located on a lovely country estate southwest of Montepulciano. It's sited on a beautiful hillside over looking the southern Tuscan country side and is surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and forest. We found the location to be perfect for exploring southern Tuscany.
You really need a car to access local shops and grocery stores but they are only a short drive from the property as are most of the local restaurants. Most dining is to be found in Montepulciano and is a 10 minute drive away. The owner, Nico, is glad to help you with suggestions for exploring the area. He constantly made our stay a great pleasure by his concern and attentiveness to our needs. He was really a joy to visit with and we look forward to returning to Sant'Antonio.
Wine lovers will be interested to know that Nico's wife Elena is part of the great Avignonesi wine family of Montepulciano. Upon your arrival you will even find wines from the estate available in your apartment. Avignonesi wines are usually listed in the Wine Spectators top 100 and are a great bargain while in Italy.
The property was originally and old monastery and has been beautifully maintained and restored. The numerous apartments vary in size and layout but all are well furnished and equipped. As cars are parked in underground garages the views from the apartments are fairly unobstructed giving the monastery a wonderful historical ambience.
The grounds included a large well maintained but unheated pool with views over the estate. Sitting areas and small gardens surround the property along with numerous outdoor tables and wood fired grills for use by the guests. Our apartment included a large front yard with trees, tables and chairs and a view.
Good quality furniture was the rule with plenty of chairs, tables, and sofas and a well equipped kitchen. The apartment exceeded our expectations and was well maintained.
The beds were very comfortable and to a high standard with Egyptian cotton sheets and quality pillows. The pristine bathrooms were of good size with modern fixtures and included thick towels, hair dryers, etc.
We really enjoyed using the kitchen and were able to cook complete meals with plenty of preparation and serving pieces for four adults. We were surprised to find a large fridge and pantry included in the kitchen. As long as your needs are restricted to Tuscan cooking styles you will have no problems. With the great local shopping, fresh local pecorino, wines from the estate and all, we had great fun putting together our many simple meals. Dining in the garden outside our apartment during the evening made for a perfect ending to the day.
Problems or Bonuses
Our only surprise came from a water heater whose pilot light refused to stay lit until a service technician was called out to remedy the problem. Even that was taken care of promptly.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Booked directly with the owner.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes, we would stay here again and in fact are planning our return another year. As long as you have a car this location is excellent.
Things to do in this area
The list of things to do in this area is extensive but if I had to choose I would naturally include Montepulciano and its wine estates, Pienza, Montalcino, Siena and its Enoteca, Sant'Antimo, Bagno Vignoni, and Monticchiello. We enjoyed the many food shops in Pienza and found that just driving the country side of southern Tuscany was a true joy. I took over 200 pictures just during one week to prove it.
