3bed/2bath house on estate south of Siena, Tuscany South

When

2002, 2 weeks

Location

This location was breathtakingly beautiful. There are several houses throughout the approx 1200 acres. The house we rented was a lovely stone house with a huge fireplace close to the main house and other houses around the courtyard with fabulous views of courtyards, olive trees, gardens and distant views of incredible beauty! There is more activity near the big house because of the farm activity, we loved it, the people are great fun. The farm houses farther out on the property are very quiet and lovely with breathtaking views. I traveled with my husband, sister and brother-in-law and I can safely speak for all of us when I say that we enjoyed every aspect of our visit here.

Nearby Amenities

This is a working farm way up on a spectacular hillside a very long dirt driveway approx 3 miles long worth every moment! This is not walking distance to a town. The kitchens are well stocked with cooking utensils, dishes etc. Be sure to order the Spannocchia harvest basket - it's a wonderful treat of organically grown products from Spannocchia. A short drive to town (Rosia) there is a fabulous market up on a hill away from the main street. Heidi the owner is charming a very helpful. This market has the finest of anything you could possibly want. We are serious cooks and passionate about great wine. Heidi carries organic produce, proscuitto, great raw milk cheeses, fine wines etc. Tastings every Sunday at about 11:00. I promise you will be hooked.

The surrounding towns offer some wonderful dining you don't have to go far. We ate and drank well. In fact our 2 favorite restaurants were in Orgia and Siena, I will update this with the names and addresses. The farthest is only 20 minutes away.

The House/Apartment

The history is unlike anything we have in the states. The stone house we lived in is several hundred years old and beautiful. The house is rustic, very clean and well maintained. The rooms are large and airy. This is not a fussy or frilly environment. The furniture is not fancy but we loved the house and the atmosphere. Every window has a wonderful view. The bathrooms are large and well equiped with deep claw footed tub, glass shower, pedestal sinks, deep windows looking out over olive groves. The bedrooms were large with huge beams ancient tile floors deep windows, old shutters floor to ceiling, huge armoire, you live history on this property. Don't expect glamour it's a property to get lost in!

If you can't relax here and unwind, then I don't think you can.

Garden

Our house had a small stone covered patio overlooking the busy (tuscan style busy) courtyard. If you want secluded this propery offers this too, look at all the properties and ask questions, none of the houses are fancy but each one offers something unique and beautiful. You can find shared, private or remote on this 1200 plus acerage.

We were there in October so we didn't swim, there is a lovely pool with a view of course.

This propery is so beautiful the landscape is spectacular. This farm is a sustainable organic farm with flower gardens, vegetables, olives, grapes, woodland, rolling fields, amazing stonewalls that date back to the etruscan days.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The house was very clean and well cared for. This is an ancient property built of stone, history is surrounding you here.

The furniture is clean but it could use some enhancements, more pillows a more comfortable sofa. There were plenty chairs etc. There is a wonderful supply of extra blankets.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

I've described the Bedrooms and Bathrooms in a previous paragraph. The bedrooms are large with high ceilings ancient tile floors, huge beams, very large windows with great views. Everything is very clean and well cared for. The beds are large and quite comfortable, if you are sensitive to the perfect pillow, bring your own. They have lots of extra blankets, pillows etc. Very large armoires, dressers. Very comfortable, easy sleeping, cozy. The bathrooms are very large, very clean, great views, footed deep tube, glass shower. The bathrooms are well equiped.

Kitchen

The kitchen is small but very workable. Everything is in good working order and very clean. This is a very old small farm kitchen, short on counter space but it didn't hinder us in the least. Evryone in our group is passionate about cooking and we created some fabulous and very creative meals without any trouble. We prepared many several course meals!

Problems or Bonuses

The people here are just wonderful! We made lots of new friends, both guests, interns and staff.

The staff at Spannochia is there if you need them but never intrusive. This is the place to relax and thoroughly enjoy nature and the beauty of your surroundings, it is a very low key paradise.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

From day one we were all treated well. We hated to leave Spannocchia we all had such a great time. This is a very embracing property. The entire staff makes sure that you feel welcome without imposing on your privacy. Almost everyone spoke English and they all helped us with our Italian.

I think if you were to ask anyone in our family we would all agree it is better than the information. It is hard to capture the astounding beauty of this property.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Without hesitaion. YES! YES! YES! I do think it is important to let people know that this is not a fancy spa. This is a lovely working farm with wonderful simple amenities. You are not roughing it by any stretch. It is large, lovely, friendly, very clean and astoundinly beautiful property. This is truly understated elegance. The location of this property is so perfect for exploring Tuscany.

With all honesty I can tell you that our family will come back to Spannocchia.

Things to do in this area

There are fabulous Restaurants within this area! (I will have to update this with my list.) The staff at Spannocchia is very helpful in pointing you in the direction of a wonderful adventure, and they are always updating their list with recommendations that they go and experience for themselves before recommending.
