2bed/2bath apartment in Naples, Campania

February 2011, One week

This is an immaculately clean, recently renovated two bedroom, two bath apartment just off Piazza Municipio in Naples. I spent one week here in February 2011 and will absolutely stay here again the next time I am in Naples.

The apartment is ideally situated for touring or for cruise ship passengers (two short blocks to the passenger ship terminal and to Molo Beverello, for boats to Capri, Ischia and Sorrento), and easy to get around as there two major bus stops within steps of the front door, and a taxi stand one block away.

Castel Nuovo, the Galleria, Teatro San Carlo (opera house) and the royal palace are just on the other side of Piazza Municipio.

Nearby Amenities

There is a medium sized supermarket about three blocks away on Via San Tommaso d'Aquino that is open all day and into the evening. There are numerous restaurants and pizza places just steps from the door.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is on the first floor (Italian) in the back of a building; its doors and windows open to an inside courtyard rather than the street.

There are a lot of locks to get through, which is not unusual in my experience. First there is the door to the building, which is locked at night but usually open during the day when the businesses in the building are operating (on the same floor as the apartment there is the office of a taxi consortium and a lawyer); next there is a locked door to the hallway on the first floor that the attorney’s office and the apartment open on to; third is the apartment courtyard door; and finally there are the apartment doors themselves (floor to ceiling doors, with matching locking shutters).

The small private entry courtyard has an overhang to block rain, and contains a small table and two chairs. The washing machine is also located in the courtyard.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was immaculate when I arrived.

The first floor of the apartment is one large, open combination living room/dining room/kitchen, plus a bathroom with stall shower. Almost everything, save for the credenza and dining table, appears to be new (and from IKEA).

The living room area consists of two large, comfortable chairs that each open into a single bed. There is a color TV with satellite (no English language channels), combination VHS/DVD player, and a CD/radio for entertainment. Inside the credenza drawers there is some information about Naples, as well as operating manuals for many of the appliances.

The dining table seats six comfortably.

The stairs reaching the second floor have open steps and therefore may not be a good idea for very young children.

At the top of the stairs is the second bath, also with a stall shower (no bathtub in the apartment).

The main bedroom features a comfortable king sized bed, two bedside tables, and a large three-part armoire. There is plenty of storage space for clothing. This bedroom also has a wall mounted color TV with satellite.

The second bedroom has a full size futon, a small desk and chair, and another large armoire. There is additional storage in a tall cabinet in the hallway.

The kitchen includes a four burner gas stove top, a full size oven, a microwave, and a full (Italian) size refrigerator freezer. Note that there are no ice cube trays in the freezer. There is no dishwasher. There are sufficient pots, pans, dishes and cutlery to cook full meals here.

Problems or Bonuses

Bonus – excellent emergency lighting. The power went out one night for about ten minutes, but the lighting was good enough to read by until the power came back on.

The only thing that keeps this apartment from being perfect is the lack of an Internet connection.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency is really just a web site that puts owners and renters together; all of my dealings were with the owner, Marco. He responded promptly to all e-mail questions and requests.

The owner required a deposit sent by wire transfer with the balance paid in cash upon arrival. He did take a cash security deposit which was returned upon checkout.

Marco and his father were waiting at the apartment when I arrived and Marco was easily reached by phone during the week.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I will absolutely stay here the next time I am in Naples.
