Review 4967: La Crociona, Apartment

Review by jrest12 from MA

apartments on an estate near Montalcino, Tuscany South

April 2011, 7 nights

The location for La Crociona is about 5km from Montalcino and is an easy ride into town. We were also close to Castelnuovo dell'abate which is where Sant Antimo abbey is located. It's in a nice quiet area.

Nearby Amenities

There is a restaurant on the same property but we never went there. We drove to Montalcino for our morning cafe on our way to other places. Montalcino has a COOP grocery store for any supplies you may need.

The House/Apartment

The building we stayed in was a one bedroom apartment with a small kitchen and separate sitting area with a nice old working fireplace. We were on the top floor and never heard our neighbors at all. In the building we were in there were four other apartments. Parking was under a covered building and a very short walk to our place. It is a working winery and the vineyards are just outside this building.

There was a peaceful sitting area which we utilized for reading and sharing some wine. This area had beautiful lilacs in full bloom and a few lemon trees. It had a swimming pool but wasn't open yet. They did have a workout area and a hot tub, which we never used since we we traveling most of the time.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was furnished very nicely with a couple of comfortable sitting chairs. The place was spotless when we got there and have no complaints at all.

The bed was also quite comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and large enough for us.

We did have a usable kitchen but we just never used it. It did have a coffee maker and pot and pans.

Problems or Bonuses

We were surprised by the generosity of our hosts. We arrived on Easter Saturday and were promptly invited to a lunch with their family, which was greatly appreciated. Certainly made us feel welcome and at home.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We never went through an agency and used recommendations supplied by fellow slow travelers. All of our hosts, Babara, Roberto and Fiorella were better in English than I am in Italian. La Crociona exceeded our expectations.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here again and would recommend La Crociona to any friend or relative as a great place to stay and a base to explore Tuscany which is exactly what we wanted. We wanted to try a agritourismo and loved this one.

Things to do in this area

In the nearby area we spent most of our time in Montalcino, which is a great walkable city with a beautiful old fort in the front of the town. There is a lot to see and has quite a few restaurants to try. Montalcino is in the heart of wine country and has enotecas that let you sample the local wines. Sant Antimo abbey is just down the road and is one of the most beautiful places that we had seen. Just really peaceful and the monks chanting was unreal. We did a couple of wine tours and Dei Barbi was really nice with some wines going back to the 1800's.
