apartments on a farm near Pienza, Tuscany South

When

April 2011, 1 week

Location

Cretaiole is located in the country with a beautiful view of Pienza on a hilltop in the distance. It sits on several acres and felt very private, although it is a villa subdivided into several private apartments. The large lawn was nice for lounging or playing games, and the property adjoins a gravel road leading to one of the most iconic structures in Tuscany, Capella di Vitaleta. We loved the area for the stunning scenery, quiet peacefulness, and convenient, central proximity to other Tuscan hill towns.

Nearby Amenities

The town of Pienza is a 30-45 minute walk or a 3-5 minute drive where you will find a grocery store, restaurants, and shops.

The House/Apartment

I don't know if the building officially qualifies as historical, but it is a farmhouse dating back to the 14th century, and is in beautiful, sound condition. It contains seven apartments of different sizes.

Garden

There were several semi-private outdoor sitting areas around the property and one shared sun-room. No pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was all in very nice condition and comfortable, many lovely antiques, very clean throughout, and plenty of seating in the open living/dining area.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bedrooms were beautifully furnished, very comfortable, impeccably clean bathrooms which we thought were ample.

Kitchen

Definitely a usable kitchen with plenty of pots, pans, and dishes of good quality which we used frequently and could be used nicely for cooking full meals. We enjoyed the modern functionality and rustic design. The "mokas" were fun to make coffee in.

Problems or Bonuses

We were pleasantly surprised at the enormous book the owner had compiled of suggested restaurants (with critiques and recommended dishes), attractions, activities, and hikes for the surrounding areas. They also had a suggested itinerary that guests could choose from "a la carte" which they would then make reservations/arrangements for.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We dealt directly with the owners, the wife spoke fluent English, and they were incredibly warm, welcoming, and accommodating. The price accurately reflected what was advertised for that season.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Without hesitation or doubt, we would stay here again and hope to. We have already recommended it to our best friends and family. It is suitable for all ages and could meet a wide variety of qualifications, because it is convenient to so many attractions in Tuscany.

Things to do in this area

We visited Pienza, toured the owners' farm, attended a wine tasting and pasta making/potluck dinner sponsored by the owners, visited many nearby hill towns - Montalcino (Brunello wine, lunch at an outdoor cafe), Montepulciano (medieval history, wine tasting), Torrinieri (for pizza), Assisi, Florence, dinner at Sant'Anna in Camprena monastery where "The English Patient" was filmed, toured Podere Il Casale organic farm and had lunch there, walked only about a mile down a gravel road from the villa to the iconic Capella di Vitaleta.
