8bed/6bath house (including annex) in Cannara, Umbria WhenApril 2011, One week LocationThe location was ideal. Cannara is a small village walking distance from the Villa. There are two restaurants in town (Per Bacco where we cooked with the owner, Ernesto, and chef, Carlo Magno), several coffee bars, two grocery stores (Conad and Coop) and assorted shops - hardware, beauty salon, home goods. It is a 15 minute drive to Santa Maria degli Angeli/Assisi. Nearby AmenitiesWe could easily walk into town for dinner or groceries and the villa staff arranged for cabs/drivers whenever we wanted to take short trips to nearby towns or to the train station. The House/ApartmentThe villa is extremely comfortable and very well maintained. We traveled with a small group of six, but the villa can easily accommodate up to 18 - 20. There are eight bedrooms and two casual "meeting" areas inside for everyone to just relax and be together. GardenThe villa has a beautiful pool and outdoor sitting area. There is also an outdoor pizza oven which we took full advantage of! Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furniture, the beds, the bathrooms - all were beautiful and extremely easy to use/comfortable. The artwork is from local artists - Suzy and Bill (the owners) have fantastic taste. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were very comfortable, the linens were lovely, there was plenty of storage and there were lamps by the beds. There are four bathrooms with showers in the main villa and 6 bedrooms. The two annex bedrooms each have their own bathroom with a shower. Each bathroom has a small standing cabinet for storage. Each guest is given a complete set of bath and pool towels. No tubs. KitchenWe loved the kitchen and cooked several times during our stay. The villa is a former restaurant - so, that makes this kitchen even more special. We had everything we needed right there. Problems or BonusesIt was a wonderful stay. The only surprise was that we had to pay for the electricity and power that we used during the week. We've learned that this is standard with villa rentals (and, please know that it wasn't that expensive), but it's very good to know ahead of time that this is not included in your rental fee. And, for city folks like us who leave a light on outside at night - there is no need to do that here! Plus, it will save you some money to turn off the lights whenever you can. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owners of La Fattoria del Gelso are wonderful people who took extremely good care of us as we prepared for our trip. They gave us a lot of personal attention and their advice was invaluable. We are so grateful to them for their help and would highly recommend renting from them. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? Our group of friends could not have been happier with our stay at La Fattoria del Gelso. It was a 50th b-day extravaganza that exceeded our expectations at every turn. From the fabulous cooking class at Perbacco to the VIP treatment in Deruta ... from the incomparable charm of Simone (fabulous not to be missed chef/owner of Le Delizie del Borgo in Bevagna) ... to the extraordinary tour of Assisi (who knew that the best thing about Assisi was the view of Perugia? Just ask Francesco!) We are extremely grateful for the great care that we received everywhere we went. And, even more for knowing that we could count on Aldo to take us safely and quickly to the next stop on our Umbrian adventure. It was truly the trip of a lifetime. Things to do in this areaWe took a lot of day trips - Perugia, Assisi, Deruta for pottery, Montefalco for a vineyard tour and even did one overnight trip to Florence.
