Review 5011: Windows on Italy, Duomo

Review by GailS from US who is a SlowTrav Contributor

2bed/1bath near Santa Croce, Florence

May 2011, 8 nights

The Duomo apartment is in a building with many other apartments all managed by Windows on Italy. It is on Via della Vigna Vecchia, right around the corner from Bar Vivoli and close to Santa Croce. The area is ideal.

Nearby Amenities

There are several grocery stores near by as well as restaurants, gelato and coffee bars. It's about two blocks from the Santa Croce square and on the opposite end of the street from the Bargello.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is in a historical building with many other apartments. The Duomo is on two floors. The first has a living room with couch and two chairs and dining table. It also has a kitchen with small table - the kitchen is well furnished and has a washing machine. There are stairs to the upper floor, which has a double bedroom, bath room and bedroom with two twin beds.

There was not outdoor seating area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The sofa and chairs in the living room were comfortable. There were two portable air-conditioning units - one on each floor that did a good job of cooling the apartment in 90 degree weather.

The bed was not very comfortable and squeaked a lot every time you moved. This was the biggest negative of the apartment and the main reason for the neutral review. The double bedroom faced an inner courtyard and was quiet. The bathroom shower head was not the best either - the spray was fine and stung if the pressure was very high. We also had issues with the hot water heater cycling, resulting in the water going cold for a minute in the middle of a shower.

The kitchen was good sized and appeared to be well furnished.

Problems or Bonuses

We have stayed in two other apartments in this building and both were more comfortable than the Duomo. We had originally booked one of the other apartments and were asked if we would "upgrade" to the Duomo apartment with two bedrooms rather than the one we had booked. We regret accepting this upgrade.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Windows on Italy has been good on many previous occasions. The request to switch apartments this time was unfortunate. We've been assured by them that this will not happen again.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would only stay in the Duomo if no other choices with similar amenities were available. There are better choices in this building and with other agencies. That said, it does have Internet, air-conditioning, Satellite TV with many English language channels, washing machine and is in a great location.
