2bed/1bath aparment in Aventino/Testaccio, Rome
June 11, 2011, 2 weeks
This apartment is in the Aventino/Testaccio area of Rome. This is a good neighbourhood for transportation to every other part of the city with bus and subway stops very close by, a taxi stand across the street and the Ostiense train station within walking distance. It is close to parks and other residences - mostly apartment buildings, but also some smaller residential buildings as well as churches. There were many other apartments within close proximity but the apartment is equipped with shutters (electronic and manual) on every window as well as full length window shades so it is easy to balance privacy with light. There is a lot of natural light in the apartment. It is possible to walk to the Colosseum from this apartment. You can easily feel like a resident of Rome when you stay here.
There are good restaurants, an excellent gelateria, coffee bar, delicatessens, wine shop, supermarket and tobacco shops within a couple of blocks of the apartment including some at the base of the building. It is within walking distance of Testaccio market which is very good for fresh local produce, fish and meat (as well as shoes).
The building is likely from the 1950's or so. There is a small functional elevator which is extremely welcome and in good working order. There are about 12 or 15 apartments in the building.
It is on a busy street, so there is street noise which could necessitate ear plugs for light sleepers. We did not have any issues with this ourselves.
The apartment is well laid out with a door between the living and sleeping areas so that people can watch television or listen to music without disturbing those who are already in bed.
There are three small balconies. One is devoted to an air conditioning unit and outdoor drying rack for clothes. There is no seating on the balconies. There is however a lot of green space visible from the living room windows - trees and other plants.
The furniture is in good condition. It was all comfortable. The apartment is extremely clean and the owners supplied clean linen and towels at the end of the first week.
There is one bathroom which only has a shower. A few more towel racks and hooks would be appreciated, but the bathroom is a good size and in good working order.
We had three adults staying in the apartment. We did not feel crowded.
The bedrooms had a lot of storage and were clean and uncluttered.
Everything was in good working order and we had no issues with electricity, hot water or the Internet connection. All of the appliances worked as expected. A hair dryer, iron, ironing board etc., were all supplied by the owners.
There were sufficient pots and pans and plenty of plates, cutlery, and glasses (but no wine glasses - we used the tumblers). The fridge is small by North American standards (under the counter size) but works well and includes a freezer. We cooked many meals in the kitchen. There is no oven, but there is a microwave and four gas burners.
There is a clothes washer, but no dryer. A drying rack is supplied. The washer worked extremely well.
Problems or Bonuses
I have rented many apartments for vacations and this is one of the best apartments I've rented. It was in a great location for transportation and shopping for day to day necessities. We had no problems getting anywhere from this location.
And, best of all, it is set up very well for renters - clean, uncluttered, and with everything in good working order.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The owners were very easy to work with. They were very communicative throughout the rental process. They met us on time, they were very responsive and extremely communicative and flexible. All written communication in English via email was easy to understand. At least one of the owners speaks English. The description of the apartment is very accurate.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Everyone who stayed here during the two weeks would stay here again and would recommend it to friends. It is perhaps not the best location for someone who is new to Rome as it is outside of the historical tourist centre, but we loved it and would stay here again.
Things to do in this area
We went to Testaccio market every other day for fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. We also bought shoes there. Volpetti is a wonderful place to buy cheese, salami, truffles, oil - almost anything! Il Gelato is right down the street and has wonderful gelato with some unusual flavours like brie and fruit. Their fruit gelati are made with seasonal fruit and are chock full of fresh fruit flavour. The restaurants in Testaccio were also good. It would be helpful to take a dictionary as many times we were the only English speakers in the restaurant.
