Review 5050: Le Silve Agritourism, Basaletto

Review by GeorgiaLetra from UK

1bed/1bath cottage outside Assisi, Umbria

Our little house on Mount Subasio, photo by GeorgiaLetra

June 2011, 1 week

Okay, we knew it wasn't exactly Assisi, but precisely, it was 10km round Mount Subasio from Assisi, and the last 6km are on steep forestry tracks.

This meant we adapted our holiday to suit - going out once, shopping en route, and staying at home in the evenings, watching the sunset over the stunning hillside, and waiting for "Beppe" to drive round to milk the cows.

We saw deer, wild boars and hares. The swimming pool was great, though we had to fish the insects out every time, and we generally had it to ourselves, though in principle it was shared with the other cottages.

Nearby Amenities

There was a restaurant at the hotel, about 3km away. We shopped in Assisi though there may have been some other small groceries about 6km away.

The House/Apartment

The buildings looked old but were in good shape and fairly recently renovated. There were eight cottages in all but it was really quiet, apart from the last day, when three loggers started work about 5am.

There was a shared pool and a beautiful garden area, scented by the broom plants flowering everywhere. The woods were just across the way and there was a map for walks.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture was fine and there were good cooking facilities.

Bed fine, bathroom good, with an excellent shower. There is no air conditioning, but it was possible to leave the windows open and shut the shutters.

A good kitchen; we ate there every night.

Problems or Bonuses

The location was remote - if you know about that it's fine. The estate was gated, with entry codes so we weren't worried about security.

There were mosquitoes.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The hotel staff spoke a little English and were friendly. We didn't see much of them. There is no internal phone between the cottage and the hotel, though we had mobile phone signals if anything went wrong (it didn't). The price was 600 per week but you could start the rental any day and stay the number of days you want. If you stay six days the seventh day is free.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, we'd recommend it but as long as people are looking for something quiet and don't mind steep forestry roads (speed limit 20km/h).

Things to do in this area

The Basilica at Assisi is amazing - full of quattocentro frescos, mainly Giotto. Goodness knows how they restored it all after the earthquake.
