Review 506: La Rocca, La Rocca
2bed/2bath house in Sutri, Lazio
September, 2002, 9 nights
La Rocca is located in a tiny piazza along the main route through the small, charming l'Antichissima Città of Sutri, less than an hour’s drive north of Rome.
Although the tower is partially attached to the buildings around it, it offers complete privacy and its height provides lovely views of both the town and the expansive countryside.
Every component of a town experience is right at your doorstep: shops and services, a fabulous “meet-and-greet” piazza and easy access to the Latium countryside.
A wonderful thousand-year-old tower! La Rocca has everything one might want in a home, and more! Kitchen and dining necessities, dishwasher, linens, washing machine, satellite TV and telephone are all included. Electricity and hot water are plentiful and there is a fireplace if you visit in the winter.
The private rooftop terrace (up one floor from the kitchen/dining area) is the perfect small outdoor space with fabulous views and is a special feature!
Clean, bright and airy, comfortably and tastefully furnished, La Rocca is a lovingly cared-for home. Although we were only one couple, two couples and, perhaps, a child could easily be accommodated.
Both bedrooms (comfy beds!) and both baths are spacious with plenty of storage. Conveniently, the bath containing the washing machine is on the same level as the kitchen and living/dining room.
The completely stocked kitchen includes a large wooden table, perfect for casual meals. Additionally, the living/dining room on the same level offers a space suitable for all the formal dinner parties you’ll be hosting.
Problems or Bonuses
Ancient, stone STAIRS to the front door, marble STAIRS to the kitchen and living/dining room, first bedroom and bath, then wide, wooden STAIRS to the second bedroom, bath, study and rooftop terrace.
Judy prepared us well for the climb and it wasn’t a problem for us, but attenzione, La Rocca has STAIRS!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Judy Harris is a delightful American who has lived in Italy for years. We made all arrangements with her via e-mails and the post. Once in Italy, we met at her villa near Trevignano and were escorted to La Rocca for a walk-through. Additionally, Judy left detailed reference information and she was always easily reached by telephone.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We had a wonderful experience while we lived at La Rocca and the only reason we won’t return on our very next trip to Italy is that we plan to travel in Puglia.
Things to do in this area
Sutri, itself, is a charming, walk-about kind of town with shops, historic churches, a tiny museum and small tourist office, a weekly market and several bars and restaurants. We can especially recommend Locanda di Saturno at via e. agneni, 37, tel. 608392, closed Mondays and Trattoria La Sfera D'Oro in the Piazza del Comune, tel. 608917, closed Tuesday.
The nearby countryside is picturesque with rolling hills, lakes (Bracciano, Bolsena & Vico) and hazelnut forests. Etruscan sites are plentiful - as close as a short walk just beneath Sutri and as “far” as the fascinating necropolis outside of Tarquinia. Also possible are daytrips to bustling Rome, quiet Tuscania, or the almost ghostly Bagnoregio.
