apartments on a farm near Assisi, Umbria
WhenJuly 2011, one week LocationBrigolante is an agriturismo in a centuries old building on a farm estate in the hills outside of Assisi. It is an ancient hamlet and is still recognized as such. This was a working farm and still is to a small extent with a few animals in a farm atmosphere. The setting is very beautiful, giving a sense of what Umbria has been for centuries. Rebecca, the owner, is an absolute delight - fun, full of information, helpful, an accomplished writer - talented in many ways. She and her family work together to assure that their guests will have a memorable experience. We did. Nearby AmenitiesBrigolante requires a car as it is not within walking distance of anything except leisurely nature walks and exploration of the countryside. Restaurants are in Assisi which is about a 5+ minute drive. Walking would not be advisable. A small grocery story is about 5+ minutes away and a larger one is down the hill 10-15 minutes away. The House/ApartmentThe building is in excellent shape as is each of the apartments. Because it is in the countryside, it is very quiet, peaceful and serene. Two of the apartments are in the same structure as the owner's home. The third is a stand alone. There is another large, old farmhouse where the parents live and which past generations have called home for many generations. GardenThere is no pool. There are lounge chairs outside under the trees and a common covered area where guests can help themselves to several of the wines and liquors made at Brigolate. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThere are three apartments, all furnished with antiques, well-maintained kitchens, nice size bathrooms with shower and jacuzzi tub. comfy beds and washing machines. The units are spotlessly clean. KitchenWe didn't do much cooking; however, the kitchen was well equipped for preparing meals. There are storage containers and bowls along with very adequate dishes and tableware. There is no oven. Problems or BonusesThis is a great location for a family with one or maybe two children. Rebecca has two boys who love to play with guests. The ability to explore and wander offers a wonderful respite to the sightseeing children have endured - patiently or not so patiently. When it is possible, Rebecca and her family prepare a dinner with their family and all the guests which is a real treat. Agency and Representatives (and price)Rebecca has lived in Italy for more than 20 years but is from the Chicago area and so speaks English as well as Italian. The children are bilingual. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We would definitely return to Brigolante ... and hope to. This is not a "luxury" property so if that is your style of travel, maybe it isn't for you. But for those who like to experience Italy, enjoy conversations about Italy and history, like to interact with both owners and guests and appreciate countryside and nature, this is definitely a place to consider. Things to do in this areaYou can use Briglante as a basis not only for Assisi and the immediate surroundings but for visits to other villages such as Norcia, Deruta, Perugia, Todi, Spello, etc. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
