3bed/2bath house in Spello, Umbria

When

2003, 10 days

Location

The house is located in a lovely, quiet street although the cars got going early each morning! There are steps up to the front door and the house is on different levels - about 3 stories with a fantastic roof terrace with some basic dining furniture, wash line etc. Some good loungers would improve the roof facilities. The views over the Spello houses and green Umbrian countyside were spellbinding.

Nearby Amenities

We had a terrific selection of really good restaurants, bars and shops. One bar had a wonderful garden where you could enjoy the beautiful Umbrian hills with their vibrant colours. The staff were amazingly friendly - our smattering of Italian did us proud! Everything was available locally and within walking distance but we did occasionally drive down town to an excellent supermarket where we purchased wonderful food from the delicatessen counter and Trebbiano wine at very cheap prices!

The House/Apartment

The house was very old - a building next to an old convent. It was full of character and the bedrooms were elegant and spacious. Two very large rooms with a double bed - so comfortable we did not want to come home! The third bedroom doubled as a study/TV room and had a double sofa bed. The floors were marble and tiled and we loved our time there.

Garden

No garden - the private roof terrace only. No pool. There is a local swimming pool but it had just closed when we arrived - end of September. The agents give you free passes to the pool - shame it was not open!

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All the furniture was fine; the dining room table could have been a bit bigger for my liking but its fun adapting! Nice comfortable settee/chairs; lots of pots/pans/crockery - everything you could need including coffee pots of all sizes, salad bowls etc. We were very impressed by the amount of stuff provided.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Beds fantastic and huge! Main bedroom very elegant and nicely furnished; bedroom 2 more basic but lovely double bed. Only one bathroom but we knew that in advance and could work around it. Bathroom had a small bath and a shower attachment and there was also a separate shower. Lots of lovely hot water!

Kitchen

We rent apartments in Rome every year and so are used to making do with small kitchens! It was big enough for our needs and we cooked wonderful full meals there regularly. Gas cooker with electric oven if I remember correctly. A few shelves - fairly basic but adequate.

Problems or Bonuses

The agents for Gorgacce have their office next door to Casa Spadolino and were a wonderful source of information. Any requests for extra towels or whatever were met at double speed. They could not do enough for us. We even learnt from them that we could order the daily paper from the kiosk in the main square so it was delivered every morning at about 6.30 a m! A wonderful service and the owner would not take the money until the very end of the holiday. Spello folk are great!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked with Gorgacce whose website we found on the internet. We found exactly what we were looking for - a house in a town where there were bars/restaurants we could walk to. A farmhouse in the country did not appeal to us as we do enjoy the Italian wines and do not to drive at night! Free parking permit provided too. David and Dilys Cordingly who own Gorgacce could not have been more helpful. We sent numerous e-mails/phone calls to make enquiries about various matters - eg best car hire company locally etc. They always replied immediately and in full; they even very kindly gave us extra time to pay the deposit! As we have never met we thought that was extremely helpful of them.

The agents in Spello speak limited English - but they have a treasure of a secretary called Viola whos speaks perfect English and was most helpful. We were totally happy with everything we had booked and paid for. Gorgacce were totally upfront about the house and their description was perfect. Cannot fault them in any way.

Note from SlowTrav: This house is also represented by the agency Vacanza Bella and by the local agency In Urbe.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely we would stay there again. Spello is a wonderful medieval town and Casa Spadolino is within the walls. There are wonderful works of art in the local churches and of course its only 10 minutes from Assissi. Perugia and Spoleto and other fabulous mountain towns are all within easy reach and the views en route are incredible. I would have no hesitation about recommending both Gorgacce and Casa Spadolino to my best friends. I would be doing them a favour!

Things to do in this area

Visiting Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Spoleto, Montefalco etc. We had a fascinating few hours in Torgiano where there is an Olive Oil and Wine museum - not expensive but totally engaging. You must not miss it!

Spello has a good rail service - no ticket office; you buy your tickets in the bar on the corner! Very Italian! Its only 2 hours on the fast trains to Rome and we went to see the Pope on the Wednesday; had a lovely time doing the historic centre, enjoyed a lovely lunch and got home at a reasonable time. Florence is also within easy reach.

My memory does not let me retain the names of the restaurants but there is a Hostaria in Piazza Matteoti (spelling?) which does wonderful food and very cheaply. The bruschetta are to die for. Sorry I can not be more helpful here but we were not disappointed with any meal we had locally. Wonderful pizzes but not served at lunch time so watch out.
