Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 5143: Owner, Porta San Donato
2bed/2bath house in Gualdo Tadino, Umbria
Sept. 16-30, 2011, 2 weeks
The rental is actually the gatehouse over the arched gateway into the lovely little town of Gualdo Tadino. The location was perfect - mountain views from one side, and town activity on the other side and walking distance to everything. It was close to other buildings, but that did not bother us at all. The town had very few tourists, and most of the residents did not speak English, but they were very friendly and helpful anyway! Everyone greeted us on the street, and those who knew English were eager to test their knowledge!
We walked to two in-town grocery stores, and a local pastry shop was just up the hill from the gatehouse. Restaurants and bars were very close as well. Nothing was more than a 5-10 minute walk away. A local Internet access site (FleaNet) was in town as well.
The gate was built in 1242 and is one of two gates to the town that are still standing. It is in great shape, and the apartment was well laid-out, spacious and welcoming.
There was no outside sitting area, but there is a nearby park and the town itself provides multiple options for sitting outside and watching the world go by!
The furniture and accommodations were excellent! All furniture was in great shape, and the space was appropriately furnished.
The beds were great, and the bedrooms large enough, with plenty of storage space. The bathrooms met all of our needs very well, and we loved having a bidet!
The kitchen was well-provisioned with plenty of pots, pans, utensils and dishes. In fact, some of the dishes were lovely ceramics from the area. We enjoyed cooking there, and we found all the appliances were in good working order.
Problems or Bonuses
No surprises because the owner had been very forthcoming about everything!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The owner was terrific! She provided lots of information before we left for Italy and contacted us while we were there to make sure we were happy. She also provided a wealth of information at the gatehouse, including maps, tourist guides, as well as CDs and DVDs for entertainment. The local property manager spoke excellent English, but the housekeeper did not.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We have never stayed at a vacation rental where the owner was more accommodating, friendly and welcoming. If we were to visit Umbria again, we would definitely consider staying here. Gualdo Tadino is a small town, and if people are seeking more activity, this is not the place for them. For relaxation and easy access to lots of sites in Umbria, the Marches and even parts of Tuscany, this is a wonderful place to stay.
Things to do in this area
We loved the local cafe/bars for a panini and a beer. The town does not have many restaurants, which could be an issue if you are there for a longer period of time. We traveled to other charming towns in Umbria as well - Spello, Assisi, Bevagna, Montefalco, Torgiano and Gubbio. We were in Gualdo Tadino for the "Games of the Gates," where the four gates compete in various sporting competitions once a year for three days. The Games and the accompanying hoopla were great fun!
