Review 5173: Owner, La Selva Giardino del Belvedere

Review by Rose from Isle of Man

8bed/5bath house near Montevarchi, Tuscany Chianti

August 2011, Two weeks

When I started to look for a two week holiday vacation for my family of nine adults and two babies, La Selva fell into my path very quickly. However,I kept the search up just in case there was something better - I viewed countless villa sites but it came clear there wasn't anything that had what La Selva had to offer and I was not wrong in my assessment.

Of the nine adults, one was 89 years with limited mobility and a few special requirements. All her needs were met and she had easy access to the garden and pool as well. The villa more then accommodated the requirements of the rest of us, including the babies who had a glorious time. The large pool was pivotal during hot August and was always sparkling and inviting.

On the practical side, the twice weekly cleaning service is efficient, cheerful and unobtrusive and the laundry well equipped.

La Selva is comfortable, well appointed, gracious in design, easy to live in no matter how old or young you are and allows individual privacy if you need; well positioned for stations and touring. Peace.

The hard working owners were a joy to meet. People of calibre - with grace, helpfulness, heart and life in their souls. Apart from allowing us the privilege of renting their most comfortable home in such intriguing grounds, they made us feel very welcome and were readily available for advice should we ever need it. My recommendation is to use their list of 'advised restaurants, shops and places of interest' as they 'know' the area and advise with your best interests at heart.

As for restaurants you need never go out to any restaurant as Maria beats the lot. Her food is fantastic and the whole eating experience will stay in your memory long after. If we hadn't had zealous cooks in our family I would have been very happy to eat Maria's food every day!

If very hot, take insect repellent and load GPS to make traveling easier. I recommend flying into Pisa and train to Montevarchi rather then into Florence - the latter doesn't cope in peak summer months with loads of tourists and the possibility of interrupted flights - it has a short runway which mucks flights up when the wind is wrong. You can hire cars from Montevarchi when the week restarts.

I would definitely recommend La Selva if you want a place that has both heart and comfort. I have stayed in many places in my life but nothing like this. Thank you very much and blessings on this wonderful homestead and to all who stay there.
