3bed/2bath house in Calvi d'Umbria, Umbria

Oct 8-15, 2011, 1 week

About us: We were two couples who have often traveled together. We have had eight villa rentals in Italy. One of our group is Italian and is fluent. We also have had/do have rental properties of our own (Caribbean, FL and coastal NC). We have used SlowTrav many times as a resource, but have never left a review. We have never left an unfavorable review of any property.

For this trip we did two one week rentals in hill towns. We used Commendable Rentals (for the first time) for this home at 7 Via di Mezzo in Calvi d'Umbria. We used HomeAway for another home in LeMarche.

The house was smaller than portrayed and dirty when we arrived. Dishes in dishwasher, floors needed sweeping, bathmats very dirty, hair on bathroom floor. There were no areas for one's personal belongings with every surface being covered with very dusty knickknacks or very old and dusty books. In the master bedroom, if one put the suitcases on the floor, it was necessary to crawl over the other person in bed to get to the door. No ice trays (important for American renters).

We did a bit of sweeping, washing, and rearranging to make the house more acceptable.

The house is only 12 feet wide and ranges over four floors with connecting steep stairwells that are only 25 inches wide. Although we are active people, the stairs were challenging if one was carrying groceries, luggage, etc. However, the size of the property was not the issue - the dusty clutter inside the house made it uncomfortable.

Calvi is a friendly little town with great views. There is a fabulous restaurant in town for a nice night out, and a good agritourismo restaurant nearby. There are nice outside areas attached to the house, pretty gardens, and a nice little swimming pool. The week we were there was quiet buggy.

I suggested that part of our end clean fee be returned. The representative offered to have someone come in and dust, we declined because so much more than dusting was needed. We did not feel that the representative from the rental company advocated for us at all, although she did respond quickly to our emails from the property.

In communicating with the agency upon our return, we were told that the owners are Romans and have different "taste" than other parts of Italy, and that the house was one of the more inexpensive houses available and was described as "cozy" (we have rented larger, cleaner houses for less on this visit and previous visits.

We love Italy and will return. We will take lessons with us from this experience:

  • We will only use rental sites in which you can see feedback from others that rented the house
  • We will have an understanding of the actual size of the house - not just how many people it sleeps.
