Review 5222: Casa Mori, Il Pollaio

Review by bdublu from CT

3bed/2bath apartment near Certaldo, Tuscany Chianti

November 2011, 1 week

Casa Mori is located in Certaldo. The cottage is in a beautiful rural, private setting on a farm that produces wine, olive oil and honey. This remote location provides the ultimate in independent living. The property is gated. The village of Certaldo is about a 5 - 10 minute drive by car. There is a train station in Certaldo that runs to Florence and other locations hourly. The property is owned and operated by the Mori family who are active on the property but do not reside there.

Nearby Amenities

A car is a must for this property. The local Coop (grocery) is in Certaldo and is about a 10 minute drive. There is a wonderful pizzeria, Pizzeria Maroni, on the road to Certaldo which is less than five minutes from the property. Great pizza, pastas and typical Tuscan fare.

The House/Apartment

The cottage was once a barn and has been totally refurbished with all modern appliances and very comfortable living spaces. It was very clean and in very good shape. There are two large fireplaces, about two feet off the ground, one in the kitchen and another in the living room. There is also a working barn on the property and the family owns dogs that are trained for truffle hunting.

There a two private outdoor sitting areas. The main sitting area is by the large infinity pool which overlooks the vineyards, olive groves and the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The towers San Gimignano can be seen in the distance.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All of the furnishings were in good shape and the cottage was very clean. There are more than enough chairs. We celebrated Thanksgiving with my son and some of his classmates from Florence. There were 13 for dinner and we had enough plates and silverware for everyone. And we all sat in the kitchen together for dinner.

There is also a lower room that walks out to the pool/sitting area. This room contains the washing machine and is a game room with ping pong, etc. There is also another large fireplace in this room.

All of the bedrooms were very nice with plenty of drawers and hanging places for clothes. The beds were very comfortable and the views of the Tuscan hills at sunrise were beautiful. The bathrooms were spacious by European standards and were well equipped.

The kitchen was wonderful for preparing our Thanksgiving feast. There is a convection oven and a stove top with four burners. The fireplace was large enough to us as a warming area. There were more than enough pots, pans and cooking utensils.

Problems or Bonuses

Upon our arrival there was a welcoming gift of a bottle of the farms red wine and olive oil as well as jar of their honey on the kitchen. Each was also available for purchase a very, very reasonable prices. All were wonderful and the wine was served with on Thanksgiving.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We had very little contact with the agency. The onsite person is a member of the Mori family and speaks English quite well. We liked that fact that she was always available if needed but did not interfere with our stay. Our rental was $1,300 for the week during our low season stay.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would stay here again tomorrow and have already recommended Casa Mori to friends. This would be a perfect place to rent with friends because the layout of the cottage is conducive to each family having there private space if needed while also encouraging togetherness. A perfect combination!

Things to do in this area

We traveled by car and by train during the week though Tuscany. Certaldo is a very central for traveling through the Chianti area. Take the cable car up to the old village of Certaldo Alto for a true Etruscan experience and have dinner at Casa Tua while there. Also don't miss dining at Casa Chianti in the Certaldo countryside. Throughout this trip and a previous visit in Tuscany, Casa Chianti was the best authentic Tuscan meal we had.
