Review 5285: Venice Rent Apartments, Academy Palace I S
1bed/2bath apartment in Dorsoduro, Venice
May 2012, 6 nights
The apartment is in Dorsoduro on the Rio San Vio canal (Dorsoduro 30123) not far from the Accademia bridge in the direction towards the Guggenheim. There are six apartments in the building all run by the Hotel Agli Alboretti which is near by. The location was quiet.
There are several restaurants near by as well as coffee shops. The most convenient grocery store is probably the Billa on the Zattere. The apartment is a quick walk from either the Accademia or Zattere vaporetto stops.
The apartment was in good shape and was quiet. The building has six apartments, two on each floor with no elevator. The living room of Apartment 1 S (first floor Italian) overlooks the Rio San Vio canal and the bedroom overlooks a garden area at the back of the building. There are no bridges to cross when coming from the Accademia vaporetto stop. The apartment has WiFi and air-conditioning.
Note from SlowTrav: after the end of 2012, this apartment will no longer be available to rent.
There was a shared garden area that was completely unkept and had no seating so hardly worth mentioning. Our bedroom did overlook it so it was quiet.
There was a comfortable sofa in the living room and a dining table. There was also a flat screen TV in the living room with English language channels. The apartment itself was clean but the ground floor entry way floor looked as it if hadn't been cleaned in some time.
The bed was comfortable and there were four pillows. Lighting for reading at night was good. The bedroom also had a second TV.
The kitchen had a small peninsula with a couple of stools. It was small but decently equipped for cooking.
Problems or Bonuses
The only two surprises we had was that one of the showers had a sliding mount for the shower head that wouldn't stay up high enough so we had to use the other shower. The apartment was also described as having a washing machine. There was no machine in the apartment itself but rather a single shared machine (and iron) on the ground floor in a room that was very dusty. There was no place to put the laundry for folding and the floor was not clean so you needed to be careful not to drop anything. The machine itself appeared to be very new.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We found and booked the aparmtment through Venice Rent Apartments whom we have rented through before. As before, our experience with them was prompt and good. We found out after booking that the apartments are actually managed (and can be rented directly through) the Hotel Agli Alboretti. All our contact after booking was with the hotel and check in/out was at the hotel front desk.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We would stay here again if we didn't have to do laundry and might even still consider it if we did - at least knowing that we may have to wait for the machine and plan for that. The location is ideal for us (we generally prefer the Dorsoduro within easy reach from a vaporetto stop). Having it run by a hotel where there is always someone at the front desk is convenient, espeically when it comes to arranging for check in since someone is always available. We paid €1250 for six nights in May - it may be less booking directly.
