Review 5287: YAIF, Via Calzaiuoli 13, Florence

Review by Richard from Australia

2bed/1bath near the Duomo, Florence

April 2012, 1 month

This apartment was on the first floor in Via Calzaiuoli, within sight of the Duomo of Florence. On the map this looked like a stunning central location and is on a pedestrian street. However it was extremely noisy, with drunks and ambulances outside at all hours. We found it impossible to sleep and had to move after two horrible nights

Nearby Amenities

Close to everything, coffee shops, restaurants and grocery stores all either directly outside or a short walk.

The House/Apartment

Apartment if on the first floor above some shops. Several apartments on the first floor, but no noise from any of them. The apartment is in good condition and generally very pleasant apart from the street noise. No double glazing which would have helped enormously.

No garden, no pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Quite a spacious apartment for two to three persons. It had a small dining table and two couches in a large living area.

Main bedroom with double bed was very comfortable. The other bed is a fold-out sofa bed in the lounge room but we did not try that. The bathroom is small but adequate and clean, although the shower had a propensity to overflow if it was turned on too hard.

The kitchen was small but completely adequate. We left after two nights as we could not sleep due to the noise so did not attempt a full meal, but it appeared to have everything, including a dishwasher.

Problems or Bonuses

The noise was just terrible. We were there in April when there are not too many tourists but the street noise was appalling at night, so much so that we could not sleep and had to move after two nights. Every drunk wandering past singing at 2am sounded like they were in the room with you, despite shutters and windows being tight closed. The windows are not double glazed and have large holes cut in the glass for some reason.

Internet access was supposed to be provided in the apartment but the signal was so weak as to be useless.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was very helpful through the booking process. When we complained about the noise they were responsive and moved us to a new apartment and then to another for the rest of the month. This was annoying but better than staying in Via Calzaiuoli. However the apartment we ended up in was very small and half the price but the agency (YAIF) would not refund the difference in cost, saying we had requested the change! They also took two months to refund the deposit and only did so when we pestered them and complained.

Note: This apartment no longer appears on the YAIF website.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would absolutely recommend against staying here. It is really uninhabitable if you value your sleep.

Things to do in this area

Centre of Florence, one of the most wonderful cities in the world. What more can I say.
