3bed/3bath apartment near the Duomo, Florence

When

May 2012, 11 days

Location

The apartment is located on Via Dell'Oriuolo in Florence, just down the street from the Duomo. Via Dell'Oriuolo is a one-way street with some shops and restaurants. Access to major attractions in Florence was excellent.

Nearby Amenities

Both Mercato Centrale and Sant'Ambrogio were a 10 - 15 minute walk. Large market down the street away from the Duomo. Small market across the street. In the streets behind the apartment were many specialty stores, butchers, markets, restaurants, bakeries, and clothing stores. The apartment is really close to the Grom gelato shop. Very close to Via Calzaiuoli. The train station is about a 15 - 20 minute walk. There is a restaurant just across the street from the apartment where we ate twice. Bus service just down the street.

The House/Apartment

The building is three floors by Italian standards, with two apartments on each floor. As far as I know only the two apartments on the third floor are rentals, but we didn't see many other people so I cannot be sure of that. The Giotto apartment has a living room, small dining room, small kitchen, three good size bedrooms, three bathrooms (one with a stall shower), and a small laundry room. Two of the bedrooms have twin beds, the other is a double. There is one bedroom up a flight of stairs in the apartment where the bathroom with stall shower and the laundry room are located. There is a skylight in this room but no other windows. There is a cover on the skylight that does not close. The apartment has WiFi, which was great and never gave us any problem.

Garden

There is a garden between this building and the one behind it but we did not have access to it. There was a locked gate.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture was in good shape. The living room has three sofas, coffee table, satellite TV, CD player, standing lamps, and a credenza. The dining room has a table with bench seating and four chairs. Pots and pans for the kitchen are located in the dining room. The dining room itself needs more light. The living room has big windows that open out for air.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were comfortable and the linens were in very good condition. Plenty of towels and extra linens for each bedroom. Having a bathroom for each bedroom was a real bonus. One bedroom has the bathroom en suite. The bathroom upstairs has a stall shower which was great. Good water pressure. Plenty of hot water. No problems with the hot water heater. Bedrooms have air conditioning that works well. You need it in the upstairs bedroom.

Kitchen

The kitchen is very small but usable. There is a four-burner gas stove-top, an electric oven, microwave, American 12-cup coffee maker, dishwasher, toaster, and good size refrigerator. Plenty of dishes and glasses for six people. The storage space for groceries is tight. Frying pans were in bad shape and in need of replacement. The knives were terrible as well. New/updated cooking utensils are needed; we had to buy a cheese grater. More wine glasses are needed. No more than two people can be in the kitchen at the same time.

Problems or Bonuses

No surprises. We had rented this apartment a few years ago so we knew the layout. The curtains and furniture coverings have been replaced since we rented it. The carpet could use a cleaning in a few spots. Lights in the dining room are needed. Having the washing machine was big bonus; we couldn't get the dryer to work properly. Need better instructions for Americans who are not used to these types of machines. Good thing we had the Internet. The apartment gets mosquitoes and it would be nice if the agency left instructions for the zappers that plug into the walls.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency is great to work with. This is our third time using them. Good correspondence via email before we left for Italy, excellent communication with the agency representative who met us, and easy, fast check-out. Everyone spoke very good English. The agency has a book in the apartment with instructions and references for restaurants, doctors, shops, etc.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, I would recommend this apartment to other. I highly recommend this agency. Just make sure to get the mosquito zappers!

Things to do in this area

We did a lot of exploring of the various neighborhoods, not so much sightseeing as we have been to Florence many, many times before. We used the apartment as a base for day trips to other cities. Having Grom close by was a treat.
