2bed/2bath apartment in Piazza Colonna, Rome

September 2012, 6 days (only stayed 1 day; vacated)

In central Rome on the Piazza Colonna. Location was excellent.

Nearby Amenities

Difficult. This is a commercial zone (mainly a shopping district).

The House/Apartment

Historical Palazzo, which is the nicest part of this review.

The apartment is up one flight of steep, narrow stairs. This is not a grand entryway: when the door opens the stairs are immediately in front of you.

When I arrived in the evening (not great lighting), I could tell that the apartment was not clean, but I could not see the extent of it until the next morning. When I had natural light, I could see: bathrooms were not clean (hair in sinks and on floor), floors throughout the apartment had dirt/debris on them, kitchen counters were not clean. I contacted Rome Capital Apartments via email and telephone. They apologized and promised to have someone clean the place before 12 noon. When that did not happen, I vacated.

I had read some prior reviews about cleanliness issues in the upstairs bathroom. I had hoped/assumed that the reviews had caused the owner/manager to correct the situation. I was wrong. It was worse than I could have imagined.

There was an outdoor area, accessible through the living room that was described on the website of Rome Capital Apartments as follows: "It is warmly recommended to reach the beautiful internal terrace from the door window of the lounge that will allow you to enjoy the unique roman climate ten months per year."

In fact, this area is a shaft-way, surrounded by the backs of other buildings.

This "terrace" was dirty and had litter on it (including outdoor furniture, which appeared not to have been cleaned in an eternity). It was not usable.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

See above. The apartment was not clean. The furniture was slipcovered in inexpensive fabrics. The kitchen, described as an "American Kitchen" on the Rome Capital Apartments website, is a mini-kitchen and ill-equipped. The kitchen was not clean.

I slept in one bed for one night prior to vacating due to the issues described above. As a result, I do not feel comfortable commenting on the comfort of the beds.

There were two bathrooms. They would have been OK if they had been clean (which they were not).

The kitchen was tiny and not usable. It is not an "American Kitchen," as billed on the website of Rome Capital Apartments.

Problems or Bonuses

Very steep stairs that appeared not to have been vacuumed in a very long time.

The worst surprise was the uncleanliness of the apartment.

I had arranged for WiFi as I am a heavy e-mailer. The WiFi, for which an extra fee was assessed, did not work.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was communicative and responsive up until the time the booking was made. It was downhill after that. I had to send the same email over and over to get a response. I spoke with the agency about the various issues (principally, the apartment not being cleaned). While they apologized and promised to send someone within a designated time frame, they did nothing. This led me to vacate and move to a hotel.

The on-site people did not speak English.

There was no "book" in the apartment explaining anything about the apartment or making suggestions about the neighborhood (grocery stores, markets, etc.).

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely not, and under no circumstances would I stay there again.

Beware of this apartment and this rental company. I have rented in many locations around the world. This was the worst experience I have ever had.

My advice: don't do it.

Things to do in this area

Location is dynamite; apartment is a dud.
