3bed/2bath house outside Alberobello, Puglia

When

September 2012, 1 week

Location

The house was five - 10 minute drive into Alberobello.

The location was very private with nice views of the countryside.

Nearby Amenities

There was nothing within walking distance. Alberobello was the closest for shopping. There is a restaurant about five minutes down the road.

The House/Apartment

The house was lovely. It's a completely restored eight-cone trullo. It was quite large, very well kept and nice and clean.

Lots of seating in the living room. There is no television, no telephone so a cell phone would be necessary and no internet access.

Note from SlowTrav: As of November 2012, it appears this property may be for sale and we cannot determine if it is still available as a vacation rental.

Garden

There's a nice covered veranda and a big stone patio with a barbeque and an herb garden. Nice views of the valley and the olive groves, almond trees and of other trulli off in the distance.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were very comfortable. The master bedroom was large with a big en suite bathroom. There were two more bedrooms, a double room, which was a bit small but enough storage space and a another smaller bedroom with a single bed.

The other bathroom was a good size.

Lots of hot water and great water pressure in both showers.

Kitchen

Kitchen was a good size. Lots of pots, pans, casseroles, dishes etc. Lots of cutlery and knives (that could have used a good sharpening). There was a dishwasher and a fullsize fridge. The stove (gas) was good along with the electric oven which was small but big enough for what we cooked.

Tea towels and dish clothes were no where to be seen, we phoned the caretaker who promptly brought some for us.

Problems or Bonuses

The big surprise was the road. Once off the main road just outside of Alberobello, you hit the lane that is only wide enough for one car with stone walls on either side. It's very rough, potholed and uneven gravel/rock for a good part of the drive. Few lights and then none at all after a certain point along the road, so very dark at night and easy to miss the road altogether or take a wrong turn until you've traveled it a few times. No where in the description do they mention this road so we were rather disappointed.

We also found it a bit isolated. We were two girlfriends on our own and the first night or two felt a little uncomfortable but got over it (some nice Puglian wine helps!!). We basically did not see anyone, other than the neighbour grading his field one day. Dogs barked continuously off in the distance (not unusual in the Italian countryside).

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner was great to deal with. We were able to pay by credit card using PayPal, which was very convenient.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I personally would probably not stay here again, just because of the terrible road to get to it. If no one minds that kind of road it would be a great place to stay.

The house is lovely, very clean and the area very quiet and peaceful and the location, except for the awful road, would be really good for two couples.

Once out on to the main road, it was less than an hours drive to many great places such as Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino etc. We were about an hour away from Ostuni and about an hour and half from Matera in Basilicata. It was about a half hour to Monopoli where the trains run almost hourly through the day to Lecce.

Things to do in this area

Alberobello is very cute but also very touristy, especially on the weekends.

We didn't eat dinner out, partly because of having to return in the dark on the terrible road and also because we'd just spent a week at culinary school and wanted to test our skills each night with our dinners. There was lots of great food shops and markets that we took advantage of.

The best market we went to was in Cisternino but also didn't get to too many others to really compare them.
