Review 5464: Owner, Casa Oliveti Selmi (#439194)
2bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice
October 2012, 4 nights
The apartment is located in Cannaregio, very close to the train station and just down the street from Guglie vaporetto stop and the Guglie bridge. It is down a quiet alleyway, and is very private. We really liked the location because we could walk to everything and yet it was well away from the crowds.
Everything you need is close by. There were several coffee places and bakeries within a block or so. And some very nice restaurants were close too.
The apartment is in an historic building that is divided up into a dozen or so apartments. This apartment is located on the third floor, and there is a lift (although we never used it). We did hear voices from other apartments, but it was quiet at night.
The apartment is small and is made up of a main room, bedroom with a queen bed, a bedroom with a trundle bed, and a bathroom The main room has a couch, kitchen table and chairs, and a hutch containing kitchen items.
You can view the property directly: Casa Oliveti Selmi.
There is no outside sitting area.
This is not a luxurious apartment; the furnishings are basic. It was very clean (with the exception of some mold in the shower area). There were a couple of things that need maintenance such as the bathroom window which opens to a space that appeared to be full of miscellaneous junk and the shower (see below). There were just two of us, so we had enough room to move around and sit, but it would be pretty tight for more people than that.
The beds were OK with nice linens. The bathroom is small, and the shower is very small. We are not big people, and we found the shower to be quite tight. Plus we had very little (if any) hot water. We found we had to run the shower for a very long time, and then the hot water would come and go in an instant.
We didn't cook at all in this kitchen, but I think there were enough utensils to cook basic meals. There was also a small, under-the-counter washing machine in the kitchen.
Problems or Bonuses
One surprise we had was the mosquitoes! We thought that in October they would not be a problem, and we opened our windows at night. Big mistake! This, of course, was not a problem with the apartment, but we did learn to keep the windows closed. The only other problem was with the shower.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We had very good communication during the booking process from the niece of the owner. She speaks English, and the owner does not. When we arrived, we were met by friends of the niece who speak very little English. However, we were able to understand each other enough to get everything necessary accomplished.
This is the only rental we've ever had where we were not asked to make any kind of deposit. Instead, we were asked to pay with cash upon arrival. I was a bit nervous about this but everything worked out great, and the people were waiting for us when we arrived.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I don't think I'd stay in the apartment again. Because we were in Italy for almost a month, we tried to stay in relatively inexpensive apartments during our stay. Since Venice is so expensive, this was one of the least expensive places we found, and we did like the location. However, I think we would opt for something a little nicer if we return to Venice.
If you are looking for a very basic, no-frills kind of apartment for a few days, and you don't want to spend a lot of money, this might work for you. It does sleep four which might make it desirable for families with children.
Things to do in this area
There's a million things to see and do in beautiful Venice. Lots of wonderful restaurants, bars, and shopping are close by.
