apartments and houses on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South When4/26 to 5/3/2003, 1 week LocationLa Sassaia, a guest house at La Foce is located in Val d'Orcia approximately 10 kms. from Chianciano Terme and Montepulciano. The estate is breathtakingly beautiful, very private and rural. The property we rented was on a dirt road with a few other homes but once we reached the house we could not see any other homes. Nearby AmenitiesA car was an absolute necessity. The closest restaurant, Oasi La Foce was 4 kms. away and the nearest supermarket was in Chianciano Terme. The House/ApartmentThe property consisted of a main house with 5 bedrooms/4.5 baths and a "dependence" with 2 bedrooms/2 baths. Both were restored and in excellent condition with modern appliances and amenities. GardenThe grounds were beautifully landscaped and maintained by a gardener who worked almost daily. There was a private pool and a pergola covered in wisteria with a large table and seating for 14. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furnishings were tasteful and comfortable. The house was spacious and the twelve of us never felt crowded. The houses were clean and the rental price included 4 hours cleaning daily. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bedrooms, with one exception, had comfortable matresses, adequate storage space and were nicely decorated. Most could be improved with better lighting. The exception was a small bedroom with built in twin beds with very thin, uncomfortable matresses. The room would probably be fine for children. The bathrooms were all clean, functional and a few had the usual European bizarre shower configuration/drainage. KitchenThe kitchen was awesome!! We did not cook much except for breakfast and a few dinners but could have done extensive food preparation here. Lots of quality pots, pans, cutlery, dishes, glassware, coffeepots, large dishwasher, 2 refigerators and space for several people to work at once. Problems or BonusesA bonus was the meal they had prepared for the evening our arrival. It was 20 Euro per person and we were surprised by the quality and quantity of the food .... we had leftovers for days! The only bad surprise was insects in the dependence but as soon as we notified Benedetta, they had exterminators spraying the unit. Agency and Representatives (and price)We dealt with Benedetta Isidori prior to and during our stay. She is a delightful, helpful young woman with excellent English skills. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We would heartily recommend La Foce and would definitely stay there again. It exceeded our expectations. Things to do in this areaWe did the usual tourist things for Southern Tuscany. La Foce is very convenient to Montepulciano, Montichiello, Pienza, Montefollonico, Montalcino, and Siena. We had 4 cars for 6 couples so could go in many different directions every day. Most of us would return for wine before dinner, compare notes and plan the next day. All of us dined at La Grotta in Montepulciano and at Oasi La Foce and enjoyed both. My husband and I had a day alone and had lunch at La Chiusa in Montefollonico which was wonderful!
