Review 5638: VeniceSplash, Domus Venetiae
1bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice
September 2013, 3 nights
The apartment was on a street (fondamenta) that fronted the Cannaregio Canal. It was three floors up (no elevator/easy steps), which afforded us lovely views of the canal.
Where our building was located seemed pretty quiet, which was nice. When we walked down our street past the bridge (not over it), it became quite lively with a more local feel to it. On the way from the train station, it had a more tourist feel to it, but that didn’t bother us so much—since we too were tourists.
It was an easy fifteen minute walk to the apartment from the St. Lucia train station (our instructions on how to get there were precise and easy to follow). That was the first of many pluses about the place.
We found a very small grocery store on our street, which was helpful on our first night there. We bought some basics and a good bottle of wine there. We also had a wonderful meal with the happiest waiter (I’m sorry I cannot remember the name of the place) just down the street. In fact, there were several cafes and bars on our street and across the canal that seemed to be thriving all day and into the evening.
We also stumbled onto a well-supplied supermercato (grocery store) as we followed our street past the bridge. We did our shopping at the supermercato by the train station. We bought everything we needed from there including some delicious whole wheat bread.
We walked to everything. But there was a vaporetto stop outside our apartment that one could take. There was also a stop for the water bus to the airport only a half block away from our building.
The apartment itself was amazing. It was spacious and stylish, yet comfortable. We really liked the feel of it. It felt roomy and cozy. The design of it flowed. The walk-in closet, bedroom, then the bath all flowed off the long hallway, which flowed into the living room/kitchen area.
We loved all the light configurations with the track lighting. The lighting in the bathroom was excellent. The place had a very high tech feel to it.
There was a lot of natural light in the apartment. It has three windows in the living room that overlook the canal. It was picturesque. I love views and this place definitely had them. I think the apartment faced south and west, which brought in a lot of light. The double pane windows kept the sound out. We opened them in the morning to let in all the atmospheric sounds of Venice (the businesses setting up for the day, people walking on the street and the various boats going down the canal).
There are three air conditioners and all of them work perfectly.
You can view the property directly: Domus Venetiae.
There’s a large rooftop terrace with amazing views. One can watch the sunset from there. There were places to sit. It was quite large and it felt private. I don't think it was a share, but belonged to the apartment.
The place was extremely clean. Nice floors. Nice, big leather couch. Big dining room table. Big screen television with stereo sound. Very comfortable. And great lighting.
The bedroom was big, but not with a lot of furnishings. A very comfortable bed that can be adjusted. A very interesting chair. There’s a door to the walk-in (hall) closet and also a door to the bathroom. Very convenient. Also the bedroom was set away from the living room by a long hall, so there was a lot of privacy.
Again there's lot of light in the room. The windows had built-in shades (as did all the windows) that totally blocked the light, if needed.
The closet was big enough to store suitcases. It also had hangers and shelves on which to put your clothes.
The bathroom was also big. It included a washing machine. The shower was big with really good water pressure and lots of hot water. It was a very high tech shower and I must admit we didn't take advantage of all it had to offer, which was a lot.
The mirrors over the counter space we're a little high for me. That's the one thing that was missing for me, a full length mirror.
The kitchen was well stocked. It overlooked the living room. There’s a large refrigerator, dishwashers and lots of cabinet space. There’s a breakfast bar, so there’s plenty of preparation space. Like the whole apartment, the kitchen just has a nice feel to it.
There were several sizes of espresso makers, which was great. There were plenty of cups, bowls, utensils, cutting boards and whatever one might need. The only thing the kitchen didn’t have was an oven, which we didn’t need (and would not keep us from renting the place again). It would have been nice if there had been a toaster (this is an American thing); but we did fine with untoasted bread and olive oil.
Problems or Bonuses
No problems. Our hosts (the owners) were wonderful, which was a bonus. They bent over backward to accommodate us. They let us store our luggage when when we arrived early and left late. They were really sweet and were extremely helpful and generous.
Another bonus was the water bus to Marco Polo Airport was on our street, less than a five minute walk out the building’s front door. We took it and it was fun and easy.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
It was easy to book through the agency. The website was easy to use. The value was great; it was such a nice apartment in such a great location.
The owners were wonderful. They made our stay even more special. From the very beginning, their communication with us was excellent, which is reassuring when you’re trying to book a place that is overseas and so far away (we live in San Francisco). They kept in contact via email from the beginning of our booking, which was about four months before we arrived. they responded to every question I had. They speak some English, but I think they use a translation program (hence we never had any problem with our communications).
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We absolutely would stay here again. In fact, we're planning on returning to Venice; if this apartment is available, we will book it.
