Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 5661: Owner, Pagoda Apartment (#235135)
Studio apartment in Monti, Rome
Oct 2012, 7 nights
The rental is in Monti, very close to Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. Easy to walk to the Colosseum, to Piazza Venezia, or to the Campo Marzio area. Good access to public transportation (bus and metro). Great neighborhood.
Plenty of bars and little shops in the neighborhood, as well as excellent restaurants. I didn't go grocery shopping on that trip, but the nearest supermarket was just a few minutes walk away.
Reliable WiFi in the apartment; strong enough signal for good quality Skype calls (audio and video).
The apartment is in excellent shape. It was quiet for the most part; there was a street festival a couple of nights of the trip, and the noise did come into the apartment; based on the volume of the amplifiers, though, I'm not surprised.
The apartment is a studio; kitchen/dining/bedroom are all the same space. There is access to a private hallway (behind locked doors) that has a washing machine/dryer. There are at least five other apartments in the building, but I didn't see other tenants very often.
There is a large locked door at the street level. Once you go through that door, you go up one flight of stairs and then into the apartment. There is a funny little step just outside the apartment's door, and less mobile people may find it a little tricky (I am notoriously clumsy and had to be careful).
There is a shared rooftop terrace up multiple flights of stairs. I didn't go up there, and I see that it is currently closed for renovations. One minute walk from a lovely piazza with a fountain, as well.
The furniture was in very good shape. Antique furnishings (table, chairs, wardrobe) add character and were comfortable to sit on. Four chairs were plenty for two travelers. Spacious room; set up large drying rack and still had room to move about comfortably.
The apartment was extremely clean.
King size bed was extremely comfortable (I like a firmer mattress). For budget purposes, shared with a friend, but the bed was large enough that I would have sworn I was the only one using it.
One bathroom, very good plumbing, especially considering the age of the building. Lots of counter space to leave out all sorts of toiletries and contact paraphernalia. The shower was a bit small, but not unmanageable. The bathroom was clean and cheerful (bright yellow tiles).
Yes, the kitchen is usable. There were plenty of dishes. We mostly used the kitchen for reheating pizza al taglio and storing cold beverages. The dishes were good quality, I'm not sure about the pots and pans.
Problems or Bonuses
I was surprised to look out the windows and see the Colosseum! The small step outside the door was tricky, again only because I am balance challenged.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Booked directly with owner. She is Italian, but speaks and writes English very well. Easy and prompt communication before the trip. We were delayed getting to the apartment because of a baggage snafu, but she was still waiting when we arrived. She spent a good 45 minutes making sure we were comfortable with the apartment and neighborhood upon arrival. She also booked our reservation for Galleria Borghese in advance, and was willing to make other reservations if necessary.
Fees and cleaning included in the price. At the end of high season, paid €750 for seven nights. Interestingly, I have booked it for another trip in Jan/Feb, and for low season I will pay the same €750 for 10 nights.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would recommend this rental. As I mentioned, I have in fact already booked it for my next trip to Rome. I would happily send my loved ones to stay here!
If you are extremely sensitive to sound, that may be a concern. However, if you're used to sleeping in a city, it's not particularly loud.
I tend to be very safety conscious, both at home and abroad, and was not uncomfortable in the area or in the apartment.
Things to do in this area
Many great pizza places in the neighborhood, good bars for espresso, great gelato. I particularly liked Pizzeria alle Carette, Il Piadineria, Ciuri Ciuri, Gelatone, and Flor.
