Review 5671: Book Sorrento Villas, Villa Cristina

Review by Jon from US

2bed/2bath house in Sorrento, Campania

October 2013, 3 weeks

We did enjoy our stay and would generally recommend BSV, BSV-ES and Villa Cristina. The owner, Pepe, was accommodating and helped us with transportation in Sorrento and guidance to sightseeing on the peninsula. The villa mostly met our expectations and Pepe, was very accommodating to our requests. However, I believe some improvements could be made and I will explain below. We used Book Sorrento Villas (BSV)and the associated "extra services" (BSV-ES) in planning for our trip. The information regarding payments and airport pick up was accurate and went smoothly. The transport to the villa went well and the driver, Tony (?), who awaited our arrival was friendly and informative. This was appreciated since we had just spent 20 hours in transit with minimal sleep.

However, when we arrived near the villa, we were met by BSV-ES "Gianni." He received our cash payment for the transport and told us the van could not be driven up the narrow roadway so he would take our luggage to the villa with his car but we would have to walk since there wasn't enough room in his car. We had one person in our party who we were concerned about walking so we asked Gianni to bring him to the villa since there was one seat for a passenger. Gianni agreed and asked the three of us to follow his car up to the villa. Please recall that at this point in our trip we had traveled for nearly a full day without much sleep. What we did not realize was that the villa was about 500 meters up a rather steep hill. Since we had no idea how far we would have to walk uphill, we think Gianni, knowing the distance and the steepness of the walk, should have suggested that the three of us wait for him to unload the luggage and come back to transport us to the villa. After all, we did pay for and expected to be brought to the villa after our long trip. We also discovered later in our stay, that another driver with the same size van easily reached the villa, turned around and twice transported the four of us to and from the villa.

Our plan for this trip was to stay in one location for a three week period and experience living the culture and environment in an Italian town. We chose Sorrento and our expectations were mostly met. We could have been better prepared for the walking and hill climbing if we had known more about the location of the villa relative to the town. By the end of the stay, we felt that we experienced what life in Sorrento is like. As we spent more time there, we began to adapt to the uphill walks, were able to choose favorite restaurants and generally enjoy our accommodations. Our everyday life in the USA is quite different and it took some time for us to adapt ... but this is what we wanted to experience.

Regarding Villa Cristina, the view was spectacular and proximity to the owner was very convenient, but we didn't realize that one suite was in a below ground level. At times it was somewhat "musty" smelling and cold, possibly due to the rainy weather we had in our first week. Again we adapted, but I'm not sure everyone would.

Also, a villa stay is not a hotel stay. We needed to prepare meals, that is, breakfast nearly everyday and occasionally evening meals. We could have used a toaster, some dish wiping towels, and a frying pan in good condition. Since we arrived late in the daytime hours, we asked about evening meal. Pepe suggested take out and ordered a delivery for us. Fortunately, we had euros to pay with but it would have helped if we had been able to better prepare for our afternoon meal and breakfast that first morning.

Our comments are our true assessment of our stay in Sorrento and any criticism is meant to be constructive.
