Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 5694: Owner, San Marcuola Apartment (#678562)
1bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice
May 2013, most recently, 4 days
The apartment is in the Cannaregio section of Venice, close to the train station (10 minute walk) and San Marcuola vaporetto stop (around the corner.) The location is fairly central, and one of my favorite areas to stay when I am in Venice.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants within a 10 minute walk or less. A large Billa supermarket is a five minute walk; there is a smaller supermarket closer. There is an excellent wine shop near by, as well as the take-out emporium Rizzo.
The building is definitely a residential building, and lived in. There is not much noise from the other tenants but there is noise from a small canal outside. You will hear the garbage "barge" every day at 8am and it is not quiet. There are a few other apartments in the building. One of them is occupied by the owner of this rental.
You can view the property directly: San Marcuola Apartment.
There is an outside courtyard sitting area but I am not sure if it is for guest use. There are many cafes and bars in the neighborhood where one can go to sit outside.
The main furniture in the living room is a large dining table and there are plenty of chairs. There is a small couch and a small TV, but I am not "home" very much so the size was fine for me. Anyone who wants to lounge around on a couch and watch TV should not choose this apartment.
The bedroom has lots of closets but some of them are filled with the owners stuff - plates, glasses, and other household items, which you can use, I guess, if you need to. The bed is very comfy.
The kitchen has a professional range! There are lots of pots and pans in the apartment, but I could have used a toaster. I do not cook a lot when I am in Venice but this is a good kitchen for cooking full meals. There is a dishwasher for dishes, but not one for clothes - could have used one for clothes more than dishes.
Problems or Bonuses
I have stayed at this apartment several times and this is my second review. Since my first stay the owner, Luciana, has added WiFi and a TV to the apartment. This is a budget rental; to me it feels like going home after staying there so many times. It is functional, but not glamorous; it is comfortable, but not fancy or plush by any stretch of the imagination.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Luciana is very nice and responds to emails quickly in English. She and her husband live upstairs. Apartments in Venice are expensive - I had to search long and hard to find one in my budget and this apartment was exactly what I was looking for. The rent is between €55 and €60 per day, and that is a very good deal in Venice.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I absolutely would stay here again. Despite the owners stuff being in and around the apartment (which usually kind of bugs me) I felt quite at home in this apartment. The only bad things I can think of are the noise on the canal in the morning - especially if you want to sleep in - but having the canal right there is pretty cool, too. The apartment is not uber-clean and people who want spotless floors should probably not stay here.
Things to do in this area
I love La Cantina Wine Bar about five minutes walk east. There are lots of things to do in the area that many tourists don't see - like the Ghetto for instance. It is a great neighborhood to stay in.
