1bed/1bath apartment in Salerno, Campania

When

January 2014, 10 nights

Location

Perfect location in the centro storico of Salerno. We loved the area, I would not stay anywhere else.

Nearby Amenities

All manner of small shops, bars and restaurants are nearby. We really enjoyed visiting all the shops to buy our groceries, there is also a Carrefour nearby, but the food in the small shops was of superior quality. Service was incredible and the people were very friendly and helpful.

The House/Apartment

It is an older building with no lift, the apartment was up a few flights of steps. It was quiet at night, there is a bit of noise in the early morning when the garbage collectors come around to collect. You must separate and sort your garbage and set it out on certain days as Salerno recycles, which is great. There is not much traffic noise as the lanes are very narrow, just a few locals who park their cars here and there.

The entrance was into the kitchen, the small bathroom was off the kitchen. There are two deep steps down to the sitting/dining room. The bedroom is on the same level as the sitting/dining room.

You can view the property directly: Salerno - Between Amalfi and Paestum.

Garden

No outside sitting area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

There was a futon that was used for sitting, this would double as a bed for additional guests. Table and chairs for four. The apartment could have used a deep cleaning, this was a bit bothersome, perhaps because it was off-season the cleaning was not kept up, I don't know.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of space for storage of clothing. The bathroom was a bit too far from the bedroom and up a couple of deep steps. The bathroom had a good sized shower and there were plenty of towels.

Kitchen

We made lunches to go every day and cooked dinner every evening. The kitchen has a cook-top but no oven, good sized refrigerator with freezer. Plenty of dishware, glassware and cutlery, the pots/pans were adequate for our needs. There were some pantry items as well.

Problems or Bonuses

No surprises.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner lives in the same building and is on hand should there be any problems. The bathroom sink was blocked and he responded promptly. He is a very nice person who responded immediately during the booking process, he speaks English well.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

It was a little bit rustic for our tastes, but the location and value could not be beat. I would recommend the apartment to budget conscious travelers.

Things to do in this area

Salerno is the perfect base for traveling to the Amalfi coast and for travel to Paestum, Pompeii, Naples etc. The main train station was a 20 minute walk, the Metropolitana train station (Salerno Duomo Via Vernieri) was a 10 minute walk, the SITA bus stop was a few minutes away. I cannot express how much we loved staying in Salerno, it is a lively little city with loads of foot traffic at night in the centro storico and lovely walking along the seafront.

Not much English is spoken but we had no trouble as we communicated with gesturing and our limited Italian vocabulary. People were so kind and helpful, they would not stop trying to help until we communicated that we understood and they could go.
