Review 5698: Owner, La Margherita (# 916110)

Review by speedwell from Canada

3bed/2bath apartment in Modica, Sicily

January 2014, One week

La Margherita is located in Modica Bassa, very close to the main shopping and dining street in Modica. We loved the location as it was an easy drive to get out to the highway and yet so handy to the shops. It is located in an area of other old buildings situated among small lanes with an easy walk to parking. The area was very quiet.

Nearby Amenities

A small supermarket was within walking distance as were numerous small shops, bars and restaurants. We shopped for groceries at the small shops where the quality of vegetables, meat and cheese was incredible as was the service.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is in an 18th century building which has been recently renovated. This apartment is a gem, we absolutely loved staying there. It is very quiet as the only traffic is from the neighbors parking their cars in the narrow lanes.

The entry is into the lower level hall way. Two bedrooms are on the lower level, one with a double bed and another with a double and a single bed. A bathroom with shower is also on this level. You ascend a flight of stairs to the main level with a kitchen, good sized dining room, sitting room and another bathroom. The apartment is in excellent condition and has been tastefully renovated and furnished.

There is a little outside seating area that is very private as it is surrounded by walls and open above. There is also a tiny balcony facing the lane. There is no pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishing were excellent and very comfortable. The dining room has a good size dining table with six chairs. The sitting room was the most comfortable of all of our rentals in Italy. It was furnished with a very comfortable sectional sofa, a large ottoman and a another chair. The apartment was spotlessly clean.

The bed was incredibly comfortable with a memory foam mattress, down pillows, down duvet, and lovely linens. There were two night tables, a desk and chair as well as a large wardrobe. The downstairs bathroom had a shower with sufficient water pressure and lots of towels. The main level bathroom did not have a shower but had a large vanity with storage for toiletries and a washing machine, iron, ironing board, drying rack, lots of clothes pegs and various laundry soaps.

The kitchen was so well outfitted, we really enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. We cooked all of our dinners and packed lunches. I cannot begin to describe all of the useful crockery, utensils and dishware in the kitchen. I will mention the knives, which were plentiful and sharp. There was a cook-top and a very good electric oven. A kettle was available for making tea, there was also a drip coffee maker and a couple of moka pots. There were many pantry items.

Problems or Bonuses

There was a excellent bottle of Sicilian wine and bottles of water left for us.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owners live in Canada and were fantastic to deal with. They responded promptly during the booking process and were very communicative prior to, during and after our stay. They have two Sicilians to look after the guests and the apartment, one of them lived in Canada for 30 years, therefore, his English is excellent. He is a very nice person who checked in on us to make sure everything was okay. The other person was very friendly; he met us and we followed him to the apartment in our car when we got to Modica. Although we protested, he carried our luggage to the apartment and then showed us around and explained everything.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here again, this was such a terrific apartment in a great location. I would not hesitate to recommend this apartment to anyone, we really enjoyed our stay here.

There was an iPod dock, free WiFi, plenty of travel books, maps and the owners put together a very useful book full of recommendations and things to do, both within Modica and in the surrounding area.

Things to do in this area

We explored the Vendicari Nature Reserve, Siracusa, Noto, Noto Antica, Villa Romana Del Tellaro, Villa Romana Del Casale, Morgantina and Aidone.
