Review 5744: Owner, Casa Josephina (#199355)

2bed/2bath apartment in Ostuni, Puglia

View from upper terrace, photo by Amy

June 2014, 1 week

Casa Josephina is right in Ostuni, on the hill just opposite the more touristic hill where the Piazza Liberta, Cathedral and tourist shops are. It's about a 5-10 minute walk to Piazza Liberta, depending on if you're going up or down the hill.

The house is on a tiny street, I would not recommend trying to drive to the apartment. We always parked near the nearby park or in the church parking lot, as directed by the owner. We sometimes had to circle once or twice, but always found a "white line" spot. Friendly elderly neighbors, very quiet at night.

Nearby Amenities

In the immediate area are bakeries (Forno 31 is amazing for breads), a frutta verdura, cafes, great fish store, and a tavola calda for simple but tasty takeout. The little cafe in the park is a great place for morning espresso and cornetto.

The best grocery store (stays open after lunch, good deli counter and fish guy) is a short drive away, the Ipersimply in the new part of Ostuni, on Via Caduti di Nassirya. Many restaurants within walking distance of the apartment, the best meal we had was at Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale.

The House/Apartment

The house is a recently renovated 18th century home, attached to its neighbors. A few steep stone steps leading to the front door. Because of the thick stone walls and good windows, we never heard our neighbors. Like most of the older houses in Ostuni, it is extremely vertical, with very steep stone staircases going from street level up to bedroom/living room floor, then to the kitchen, and a few more to the lower terrace, and another flight to your reward of the top terrace with breathtaking view. This is not the house for anyone with mobility issues.

Fabulous terraces - the lower one (with interesting though not particularly scenic view of rooftops and TV antennas) with a nice table and chairs; and the upper one with sofa and chairs, and fabulous view toward the historic hilltop, Cathedral, and the olive groves and water beyond.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The house was immaculate. All furniture was comfortable and in good condition.

The large bed was very comfortable, with plump pillows and good linens. This bed is separated from the living area by a curtain. The second bedroom is very small, with a twin bed. The bathroom was small but very functional. Note that the second bathroom is on the ground level, we never used it. Although there is a futon in the lower level for additional guests, that room is a bit dark and not as charming as the upstairs rooms.

The kitchen was very workable, we made several full meals. No oven, but cook-top and microwave. There is also a BBQ on the terrace we used several times.

Problems or Bonuses

We thoroughly enjoyed staying here, and got a good workout on the stairs!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owners were very prompt and helpful, and the house-book useful with details on parking and sightseeing. The key-holder speaks English. The website very accurately represents the reality.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I'd recommend the house, with a fair warning about the stairs.
