Review 576: Residenza Il Carmine, Apartment

Review by caplanco from CO

apartments in the Oltrarno, Florence

April, 2003, 9 days

Residenza Il Carmine is located on a quiet, narrow street in Oltrano. We prefer being on this side of the river as it is more like a neighborhood. If you have a small car you can drive up to unload luggage, but you must park in a nearby paid secure lot. It is a short walk to both Piazza Carmine and Piazza Santo Spirito, and across the bridges.

Nearby Amenities

We walked to everything. We parked the car the day we arrived and didn't use it until the day we left. There are green grocers a block or two away. On our way to San Trinita bridge we always stopped at Mariani for caffe. We walked to P. Santo Spirito frequently for dinner, as there are many good restaurants in the area.

The House/Apartment

The building is historical and has a marker noting the birth of Fillippo Lippi. (Of course, we then felt compelled to seek out Lippi's work wherever we were.) The apartments are modern with Florentine furnishings, tiled floors. They've done a very nice job of using brick arches and stucco walls. Kitchen and bathroom have modern and efficient plumbing. There is no oven. We had to extend our stay one day and had to move out of our apartment and into Oro, 35 sq. metres. It is a studio apartment and uses every inch of space very well.

There is a central internal garden, which is mentioned on the web site, but which we weren't aware of until the day before we left.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was spotless. A maid comes in every day to empty trash and make the bed. The living area has two single sofas which can be used as beds, adequate lighting, a TV and coffee table. There is a dining table with four chairs in front of the kitchen. The bedroom has two night tables, a storage closet, and a large wardrobe.

We did cook in twice. Everything had to be done on top of the stove as there is no oven. When I asked for a sharp knife, Miriam, the landlady who lives on the premises, got one for me immediately. I'm sure she would have filled any other reasonable equipment requests.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked directly with Residenza Il Carmine and found them very pleasant to deal with. Miriam is helpful and available; she can be phoned directly from the apartment if necessary.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would definetly stay here again.

Things to do in this area

P. Santo Spirito Ristorante Ricci Had two very nice dinners here. It is seafood based and not typical Tuscan. The owner is a lovely woman who wants you to enjoy your dinner. When you sit down, a glass of proseco is set before you. One or two interesting appetizers are brought to you such as a mold of Italian style guacamole topped with chopped shrimp.

V. Santo Spirito Trattoria Angelino Excellent grilled meats

By the San Trinita bridge Bar Mariani Friendly barrista and helpers. Good caffe and brioche.
