Review 595: TuscanHouse, Casa Anna

Review by terir from TX

3bed/2bath house in Monticchello, Tuscany South

May 2003, one week

Casa Anna is located in a very small, picturesque village of Monticchello, approx. 5-10 minutes from Pienza which is another wonderful town with good restuarants and close enough to drive in the evening after a few vinos. It was nice having the variety of the two towns within such a short distance.

Nearby Amenities

There is a fantastic restaurant that has been mentioned several times on SlowTalk - La Porta - we ate there at least 3 times, every meal delicious and the owner, Daria was so friendly, she even let us use her computer. There is also a small caffe place offering bruchetta, sandwiches, gelato, drinks, etc. Very popular also. There is a small grocery store, a very short walk from the village gate so really everything one could possibly want is right there. Plus Casa Ana has a wonderful, LARGE garden with lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, fruit trees, artichokes, etc, all there for the taking. There is a major grocery store about 10 minutes away.

The House/Apartment

The building was historical, I wish I knew it's age. It has been completely restored and done beautifully. The kind of place you wish you could beam up and take home because it is impossible to copy the feeling using all new materials. Comfortable beds, nice - large bathrooms, a fantastic kitchen with everything you could possible need, wonderful linens, I could go on and on, I do not have a single complaint. We are fell in love with the home, the village and the owner of Casa Ana. She could not do enough for us, a truly lovely lady.

THE GARDEN, absolutely wonderful and huge. It was so refreshing after a day of rigorous sightseeing to return to this lovely respite, sit overlooking a beautiful valley lined with cypress trees, an oasis of absolute peacefulness and tranquility. No cars, vespas, intrusions; just heaven.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were in excellent shape and very tastefully done. Anna obviously put a lot of love in refurbising and decorating this home and she also is very talented.

The bedrooms were very nice, again beautfully appointed. The bathrooms were large and clean. I would not say this is a glamourous house, it is more a lovely home, a place anyone would like to call their own.

The kitchen has been completely restored and is a work of art with everything one could possibly want. I wish we had been there in the winter to use the fireplace, it looked so inviting. Some sort of rustic fireplace/oven - this kitchen does a have a new built in oven also! We ate all our meals in the local restaurants and only used the kitchen for snacking, though we did have Sacha come in and cook one evening. She apparently has been to Casa Anna several times and loves the kitchen also.

Problems or Bonuses

Washing machine is a real bonus and clothes line in the garden actually made it much less a chore. Would you believe I had my husband install a clothes line when we returned home but alas, it just was not the same feeling! It is rather hidden so the neighbors don't pitch a fit!

Not a single problem, I would return in an instant and stay 2 weeks, not just one because the proximity for visiting Tuscany and Umbria is terrific.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

As everyone out there has heard on many occasions, Zak with TuscanHouse was wonderful. Unfortunatly we missed our chance to meet him when he was in our little village. He was a wealth of valuable information and took care of every possible detail. Our deposit was returned immediately - we will definitely use him in the future.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would recommend this to the Pope and Santa Claus - it was lovely.

Things to do in this area

I wish I had my notes with me, let's see. There is Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Cetona, Orvieto, the La Foce gardens, the gregorian chanters at Sant'Antimo. There are also several spa towns very close by. There was just so much to see and do and yet we had the luxury of returning to such a lovely home and knowing we would have a great meal and wines at the local restaurant. Latte di Luna in Pienza was a great restaurant also. Life was Grand.
