Review 620: Ville in Italia, Villa Rosy
2bed/2bath villa near Massa Lubrense, Campania
JUne 14 - 19, 2003, 1 week
Villa Rosy, hanging above the Mediterranean just between Sorrento and Massa Lubrensa is a lovely large Villa suitable for two or four people with an awesome view of the Island of Capri. It is the uppermost of two villas and occupies the true panoramic view with a great large terrace accessible through French doors from the living room, and more French from the full dining room. Part of the eating area on the terrace is provided shade by an arboretum: a living brace of leafy grape vines. On the south side of the villa the narrow part of the terrace is accessible from a single door out from the kitchen and through French doors out of the master bedroom.
There is a second bedroom (two single beds) with French doors opening onto the garden in the rear. Two bathrooms and the main entry way also have large windows. There are nice showers in both baths – no tubs.
There is no way to arrive at this villa without a car. And the roads are extremely narrow - negotiated sometimes by inches (again this is from an American perspective).
It was very hot when we were there. A restaurant owner in Rome told us that June, 2003 was the hottest summer in 100 years. There is, of course, no air conditioning at Villa Rosy, so we spoiled Americans bought a fan.
Immediately beneath Villa Rosy is a larger villa (Villa Angela) with two floors and many less French doors and windows than in Villa Rosy. We assumed it must have been much hotter for the residents there. The only hassle regarding sharing the building was that in order to get to the pool we had to walk through their terrace (sometimes when they were outdoors eating) in order to access the pool. The pool was clean and well serviced.
One major drawback [for us spoiled Americans]: just beside the villa (beyond the pool terrace) there ran a stream down the mountain from the village above. The constant sound of a rushing stream was nice, the stench was often offensive... especially in the master bedroom of Villa Rosy. It smelled like sewage to us. Maybe that had something to do with the hot weather in June 2003.
