Review 632: Venice Rentals, San Aponal Apartment
July 8-12, 4 Nights
The apartment was located in San Polo at Campo San Aponal. The location was quiet, and away from the hustle and bustle of tourists, yet very near the Rialto Bridge and a short walk to San Marco. In other words, it was as if we were living like Venetians in a quiet, local area; yet we weren't far from the tourist sights, as well. We really felt like it was the perfect location to be in.
We were literally around the corner from one of Venice's three grocery stores. There was also an ATM, restaurant, produce stand and tobacco shop around the corner. Much shopping and souvenirs were also nearby, but not right at our front door, which we preferred.
The building was in good shape and the apartment was newly renovated. There were only two other apartments in the building that we noticed. The apartment was on the top floor (60 steps) up, which provided much privacy. The walk up was not bad, considering we were working off all that wonderful Italian food.
There was a rooftop terrace up a winding wooden staircase near the interior apartment front door. The terrace was for the sole use of our apartment only, and we very much enjoyed spending our evenings up there admiring the Venetian rooftops. We even had a wonderful view of the San Marco Campanille from there. The terrace provided 360 degree views over Venice and you could hear a pin drop up there after 9 p.m.
The furnishings were fine considering we were mainly in the apartment at night. The apartment was not necessarily fancy, but provided the necessities needed, and was comfortable, overall. We felt it was very comfortable. The living and kitchen area were as one, but it was plenty of room for two persons. The living room had a love seat, as well as a table and two chairs, television and phone. There was also a washing machine in the kitchen area, which came in very handy with our packing light. There was also an iron and ironing board, as well as hairdryer and basic appliances. The apartment was overall clean when we arrived.
The bedroom had a comfortable double bed with nightstands and plenty of closet and drawer space, as well as a desk and chair, along with some shelves. The bathroom had all facilities that we needed, including shower, toilet, bidet, and sink, as well as cabinet space.
The kitchen had a stove top, oven, fridge, freezer, pots, pans, dishes, etc. There was not anything that we felt we were lacking in the kitchen in so far as making simple meals.
Problems or Bonuses
The apartment had a moving A/C unit that could be directed to any portion of the facilities. We honestly felt cool enough with the A/C unit and we were there during the month of July.
We did not have any bad surprises, but a few good ones were had. When we arrived, Denise had assisted a friend of ours in arranging to have one dozen roses and a beautiful card awaiting me upon my husband's request. We were to renew our vows for our ten year wedding anniversary the following day, so this was quite a surprise! And, I know that Denise had to go out of her way to arrange to meet with the delivery person.
Denise also took us to a Venetian glass bead seller, upon our arrival, when she knew that we were looking for beads to exchange for our ceremony the next day. She also ensured that we had a full length, as well as smaller mirror, and anything else we needed to make sure our vow renewal preparations went smoothly.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
In all of my dealings with Venice Rentals, Denise was always very prompt in responding to me by email. She also met us at the vaporetto stop near the apartment, showed us around, got us acquainted, answered our questions, and also was nice enough to take us around to the nearby grocery, ATM, etc. Getting acquainted with the neighborhood is something we've always had to do on our own with rentals in the past. However, Denise was wonderful about showing us around the area and noting any places that would be of interest to us.
Denise and her husband were both wonderful about any inquiries that we made by telephone during our stay, as well. Denise and her husband both speak very good English, and even knew which apartment we were calling from before answering, when rarely had to call them.
The photos of the apartment on the website accurately reflected the apartment. Actually, to our surprise, the apartment was even nicer than we had anticipated.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would highly recommend this apartment, as well as the agency, to other renters. The service that we received from Venice Rentals, as I'd read from previous renters here on slowtrav.com, was above and beyond what most rentals in Europe offer. Denise and her husband were wonderful and the apartment was great. When we return to Venice, we will be renting there again.
Things to do in this area
The apartment is very near the Rialto Bridge, as well as many other sights. We very much enjoyed having an evening glass of wine and cichetti at an osteria near the Rialto which was called Bancogiro Osteria da Andrea, San Polo, 122. There were mostly locals there, and the evening quiet of the Grand Canal was lovely. There was also an internet cafe next door to this osteria, which was very convenient to us.
As previously stated, there was also much shopping and just about anything you could need nearby. Everything from the grocery, to produce (including the famous Rialto market), to personal care products, to souvenirs (both high and low end), as well as restaurants, cafes, and wine bars.
Overall, we loved both the apartment and location and will return!
