apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South WhenOctober 2001 and June 2003, 1 week each time LocationSant' Antonio is located about 2 km outside the walls of Montepulciano. It has a lovely setting in the countryside, perched up on a hill overlooking the farms and landscape below. Beautiful cypress trees line the driveway. It is very private, with a gated entry and is surrounded by woods, vines and trees. It is truly quite beautiful. It is well situated for day trips to other villages. Nearby AmenitiesYou must make the short drive into Montepulciano for your groceries or closest restaurants. It is a nice, short drive. The House/ApartmentThe complex was originally an 7th century monastery. Over the years it was developed into a farm and in recent years became a private residence. It is very well maintained. There are several buildings. The main structure has 7 apartments plus there are two stand-alone units. The units vary in size but all have fully equipped kitchens and nice bathrooms. There is not a sense of lost privacy with the apartments. They are situated in such a way that you do not feel crowded or on top of one another. GardenLovely outside sitting areas throughout the grounds. Tables and chairs on grass areas so that you can sit with your cheese, bread and wine, relaxing while enjoying the wonderful Tuscan air. There are several brick barbecue areas scattered around with tables overlooking the countryside. The areas are shared areas but there are several with proximity to various units. They are like garden areas--not patios. There is a beautiful pool with lounge chairs. Currently a small pond is being created, which, I believe, will be suitable for fishing. Vineyards surround the property. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasEach unit has plenty of furniture. Much of it is of an older, country antique type. It is attractive, in good shape and comfortable. The apartments are maintained well with cleaning and new linens mid-week. They are equipped with brooms and cleaning supplies so that you can maintain them from day to day. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds are comfortable. The linens are top quality. Egyptian cotton sheets and plush, big towels. The bathrooms are nicely done with pretty tiling. Our two bedroom unit had two bathrooms. KitchenThe kitchen areas are small but are adequate for preparing simple meals. I would not attempt a major, big-time meal in them. Because of some bureaucratic problems, the units do not have ovens or microwaves. This has something to do with the available power supplies through Montepulciano. The utensils are of good quality and the kitchen is well supplied with pots, pans, dishes, wine glasses, etc. As with the linens, these are of very high quality. I had no problem cooking and we enjoyed our meals at home. Problems or BonusesNico, the owner, is charming and accommodating to your needs. We truly enjoy him. Can't think of any surprises except he keeps making improvements and so it is fun to return there to see what is new. A bonus at Sant' Antonio is that Nico will rent for less than a week. Agency and Representatives (and price)We worked directly with Nico via the internet. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We absolutely recommend Sant' Antonio. We have now stayed there twice and will return--probably with each trip to Tuscany. Things to do in this areaThis is a great location for day tripping to Montalcino, Pienza, Chiusi, Cortona, Arezzo and many other locations. We have gone to beach areas from here. For recommendations for restaurants, daytrips, etc., link to my website for information from both 2001 and 2003. This is easier than repeating it all here. www.janeandken.com Just navigate to the portions you want to visit. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
