2bed/2bath house in Gioia Tauro, Calabria

When

September, 2003, One week

Location

The house is in the quiet little village of Gioia Tauro on the Costa Viola. It is a 40 minute drive to the ferry that goes to Sicily, and close to several beautiful beaches. There is lots to explore in the surrounding area. This is not a touristy town, but perfect if you want to live in a quiet little Italian town with 5 star accomodation.

Nearby Amenities

There is a wonderful grocery/fruit/vegetable market around the corner. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Great gelato and pastry shop two minutes away!!! The local supermarket had everything we needed. We also enjoyed shopping at the weekly market. Great Enoteca on 'via Serra' for some lovely wine and again the owner was very helpful with his recommendations. We tried a number of the restaurants that the owner of the house had recommended to us. We especially liked 'U-Bais' in Schilla.

The narrow street that the house is located on can be quite busy sometimes during the day, but it is very quiet at night.

The House/Apartment

A great deal of thought was put into the renovations of this lovely house. Open concept on the main floor with a spacious living roon, dining room, beautiful kitchen, modern bathroom. The second floor had two spacious bedrooms (air-conditioned - very quiet), and a beautiful bathroom. The kitchen had everything you could possibly want. All the windows had screens.

Garden

No pool, but it was not needed. Much better to explore the beaches.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were great (new). The dining-room was spacious and had more than enough comfortable chairs. Living room was very comfortable and we enjoyed having the stereo. It does have two TVs, but we usually chose to read in the evenings or plan our events for the next day. The house was extremely comfortable and a treat to come home to after a busy day exploring. It felt like home!

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

All the bathrooms were beautiful with the most luxurious towels and it was so nice to have a hot bubblebath! The bedrooms were spacious ... lovely linens, lots of pillows and the most comfortable mattresses. The master bedroom had a spacious walk-in closet and also a great little balcony.

Kitchen

The kitchen was a dream to cook in. Truly a cooks' kitchen. It had everything you could possibly need and more. Lots of dishes, good quality pots and pans. It also has an oven, plus a microwave. Big bonus was the washing machine with an outdoor area for hanging laundry.

Problems or Bonuses

Lovely gift basket when we arrived was a nice touch. One of my travelling companions had a medical problem during our stay, and the owner and keyholder went way out of their way to help us.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner went out of his way to make our stay as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible. We were greeted with a large gift basket, also received alot of excellent information on the area.

The key-holder met us promptly, gave us complete details on how everything worked, he was a wealth of information and took care of every possible detail. The key-holders English was very easy to understand (better than my Italian) and his big smile and enthusiasm warmed our hearts.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would go back in an instant, I highly recommend the house. We were only in Gioia Tauro for a week and it was too short. We missed seeing so many places!

I enjoyed strolling around the town in the evening, people watching and of course stopping off for a coffee or a gelato.

I would recommend that visitors learn a few words in Italian even if it is only good morning, please and thank you. Try one new word a day! The difference it makes is worth the effort.

Things to do in this area

Stunning beaches in the immediate area , lovely fishing villages - Schilla was one of my favourites. The ferry to Sicily is a short drive. Locri and the Ionian coast was one of the places I missed seeing - next time. There are so many places to see and things to do. It was impossible to cram everything into one week.

The drive from Rome to Calabria is beautiful and an easy drive. Excellent roads - no tolls. Beautifull bridges, long tunnells and the water is so blue!!

My favourite restaurant was the U-Bais in Schilla. The swordfish was outstanding.

I found the Calabrian people extremely warm and friendly and it was so nice not to have crowds of tourists!!
