Review 747: Appartamenti al Poggiolo, Apartment

Review by Coco2311 from TX

apartments in Montepulciano, Tuscany South

September 2003, 1 week

Our apartment was one of four in the building located inside the hill town of Montepulciano. Loved the location -- Montepulciano is very charming. Our windows (apt. 4) overlooked the beautiful countryside. When we stepped out of our door, if there were no vehicles parked, you would not know which century you were in. There was a little park, complete with a shrine, nestled between the walls at our tiny intersection and sometimes we would see older locals sitting and chatting. It was very peaceful -- we had our windows open and could hear birds and the occasional church bells. Traffic inside the city walls is VERY limited -- maybe even just to locals. See parking info below under "Bonuses".

Nearby Amenities

Everything (shopping, eating, bars, groceries, interesting sites) was within walking distance. There is another grocery store just outside the old city walls which you could drive to if you were buying more than you could carry.

The House/Apartment

The property has been in this family for several hundred years but has every modern convenience. Each of the four apartments is different and charming in its own way.

The website is EXCELLENT and gives not only floor plans but photos of every room and some outside views. It gives a thorough description of everything and the owners are happy to answer any questions.

There is no pool; however, there is a very nice garden area. At one end of the garden is a sitting area behind the owner's quarters; however, we didn't inquire if it was for guests or not. It really wasn't an issue since we stayed so busy. The little park outside our front door had benches and a low stone wall.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything is just as shown in the many photos on the website. No misrepresentation here!

I thought everything was great. Believe that what we think of as 'queen' or 'king' (?) consists of twin beds pushed together called a matrimoniale. Plenty of built in storage/closet space.

Bathrooms had showers and were certainly adequate for our needs. Towels and sheets are provided.

The kitchen was immaculate and it had enough of everything. Our apartment did not have an oven but since I seldom use one, it was not a problem. Had everything else -- microwave, dishwasher, stove top, small refrigerator, etc.

Problems or Bonuses

The OWNERS could not have been nicer. They told us to call them when we reached Montepulciano so they could meet us. They were so warm and friendly! We followed them to their GARDEN CAR PARK next to the apartment! This is a huge bonus in Montepulciano since convenient visitor parking is difficult at best.

They have a LAUNDRY room dedicated to each apartment.

TV but no CNN -- Problem? Bonus?

On the down side, there is no train station in Montepulciano; however, we drove to Chiusi when we took a day trip to Florence. There is a local bus station which provides transportation to many locations, including the station in Chiusi, but we never needed to use it.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

On the afternoon we arrived and had settled in our apartment, the owners took us on a walking tour to point out some of the local sites. They generously shared their extensive knowledge of local history and architecture. One of the sisters is a translator so English was not an issue.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely! We hope to go back again next year. There wasn't anything that we didn't like -- honestly!

Things to do in this area

On their website, the owners have a list of activities in the local area -- for those with and without transportation.
