apartments on estate near Pienza, Tuscany South Whenbefore 2000 ReviewWe stayed at the Piccolomini Princess's restored borgo (tiny flats with kitchenettes) near Pienza. It's in truffle country, near San Giovanni d'Asso. The estate belongs to Princess Piccolomini and her (equally elderly and charming) sister. They are the heirs of the famous Pope who died of heartbreak after calling a crusade to depart from Ancona; he waited two years but no one came. He was otherwise quite a nice Pope, and it was he, of course, who built Pienza as a sort of ideal city. The borgo the family owned has been turned into much sought-after small apartments; some at least have very cute kitchens. It's all very, very nice.
