2bed/2bath apartment in Palermo, Sicily

September 2000, 1 week

In September 2000, we rented an apartment in a villa in Sicily for 1 week. The 200 year old villa in the Mondello section of Palermo is now a private compound with a number of apartments. The apartment we had was quite large, very lovely. It had a beautiful terrace and a great view. The whole apartment was extremely well furnished and quite charming. The kitchen was large and well equipped. They even left us fresh fruit and bottled water.

The street in front of the villa is extremely busy and noisy. In the vicinity of the villa the street is only wide enough for one way traffic, but it is a two way street. There are 2 traffic lights about a mile apart (one of which was right in front of the villa, adding to the noise at night) that are timed so that one light is red while the other is green. This allows traffic to flow one way at a time. There are high walls on both sides of this narrow winding street and no sidewalk. It is impossible to walk on that street. It is too far from any public transportation or stores and a car is an absolute necessity.

The villa is located at the edge of the city of Palermo, near Mondello. But Mondello is still a 10 mile drive away. It is right at the foot of Mt. Pellegrino. It was a storybook villa – sweeping staircase, crumbling stucco, completely walled in and private, well landscaped, a complete private compound. The landlord spoke fluent English. The apartment was great, but I would not recommend it, especially for a first visit, because of the location.
