Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 81: Parker Villas, Masseria del Sole
2bed/2bath apartment on farm, Sicily
October 2000, 1 week
In October 2000, we rented an apartment on a farm in Sicily for 1 week. The farm (called a "masseria") was south of Ragusa. It was a lovely place. The rooms were large and nicely furnished and the terrace was large and comfortable. It was country furniture, but quite nice and sufficient. The apartment has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, and a large common room that is both living room and dining room. The kitchen was long and narrow, but fine.
The place was much more isolated than we had expected, but we liked it. It is in the middle of cow/dairy farms on a narrow road. It is extremely rural, but beautiful and quiet. It is between Ragusa and Marina di Ragusa. There is a large supermarket about 2 – 3 miles north. You can walk from the farm on the dirt road, but you cannot walk to any nearby town. The farmhouse area is completely walled.
A car is an absolute necessity. I was the only one of the four of us who was able to navigate the way back whenever we went out. But it was charming and very peaceful. The work that has been done on it so far is excellent. There were two men working on the other side of the farmhouse, but they did not disrupt anything. It is no longer a working farm. The owners are from Rome and are the last of the original family. They are building more vacation rental apartments on the farm.
We did not meet the owners. We were met by 2 young ladies from a travel agency who handle the rentals for the owner. They were very helpful. They met us at a local hotel (which was a medieval monastery) and we followed their car to the farm, then we followed them to get out of the farm area and to the supermarket. We would never ever have found the place without them.
I would recommend this vacation rental if you want peace and quiet and an authentic Sicilian setting. The word Masseria means fortified farm. This was originally a self-contained farm - walled in for protection from raiders. This is common in that area of Sicily (the Ibla section around Ragusa). The stone fences everywhere were striking. This is a good place if you want an unusual living experience and are experience travelers. It was very different and quite lovely, but isolated and not for everyone.
