apartments in Montepulciano, Tuscany South

When

April 2004, 1 week

Location

The four apartments of Al Poggiolo are located in Montepulciano, a great town for shopping, eating, and stretching the muscles in your legs (it is very hilly!) The apartments are at the edge of town so you can walk out the front door and be in town yet look out the back windows and see nothing but the countryside. Perfect! It was very quiet the week we were there, and we loved the area.

Nearby Amenities

You can easily walk in town to small grocery stores, restaurants, and caffes. Every morning we walked down to our favorite caffe, and each night we tried a different local restaurant. There are several very good restaurants in town that you can go to by walking. Montepulciano also has many enotecas where you can sample and buy the local wines.

The House/Apartment

The building is very old, and (if I understand the owners correctly) has been in their family for years. It had been abandoned for a long time, and then Elena and Margherita (the two sisters who own the apartments) decided to convert the building into apartments. There are four apartments currently in the building, but Elena and Margherita are also remodeling another building they own with more apartments.

In the remodeling, they have spared no expense to make the apartments first class. Everything is new and in perfect condition. When I mentioned this to the owners, they said that they tried to think of everything they like to find in a vacation rental and include it in the apartments for others.

Garden

There is no pool, but there is a wonderful garden area that can be used by the people in the apartments. The garden overlooks the countryside and is very private. Additionally, the garden area has a parking area which is where the guests park. When you check in, you are given a key that opens a security gate so you can drive right into the parking area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything in the apartment appeared to be new and in perfect condition. Everything was extremely clean.

Truly, the owners have thought of everything. There was even a small hairdryer in the bathroom, something that most vacation rentals do not include.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bed was comfortable and had very high quality linens. Both of the bedrooms had lots of storage so you could really unpack and make it "home". Plus each bedroom faced the back of the apartment so you looked out your window and saw the beautiful views of the country.

The bathrooms were large and clean. There was plenty of hot water and great water pressure too! My favorite thing in my bathroom was the hot water radiator that hung on the wall and would heat up my towel for me ... wonderful!

Kitchen

We did not cook full meals in the kitchen, but did have breakfast each morning there. The fridge is small but sufficient. The kitchen has a complete set of dishes and all the necessary pots and pans for cooking full meals. There wasn't an oven in our apartments, but I do believe that some of the apartments had one. The apartment had a diswasher.

Problems or Bonuses

No surprises. The apartments were even better than we expected. Not only do the owners have two washing machines for the 4 apartments, but they also have dryers! (It is unusual to find dryers in rentals in Italy.) Plus the dishwasher in the kitchen!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owners (Margherita and Elena) and their husbands were very welcoming toward us. When we arrived, they were out working in the garden and appeared to be thrilled we were there. All four of them showed us around the apartments and were so warm and kind. All of them speak English, and we had no problems communicating at all. They are proud of the apartments and want to make sure that their guests enjoy their stay. Some of the previous guests had been Slow Travelers and so they are familiar with the website.

It is important to note that the owners are in Montepulciano on weekends, but generally live in Rome during the work week. They made sure we had their phone numbers in case of problems.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would absolutely recommend the apartments to others. While we were there, Margheria and Elena showed me the other 3 apartments, and all of them are furnished with the same care as the one we rented. I truly can not think of any reservation I would have in recommending this rental to anyone. Great apartments, caring owners, and perfect location.

Things to do in this area

We enjoyed exploring Montepulciano itself, but also visited many of the surrounding towns. We also took day trips to Siena and Orvieto. The Slow Traveler website has lots of information about this area.
