2bed/1 bath (sleeps 6) in San Polo, Venice WhenApril 15 - April 25 2004, 10 days ReviewA cooks paradise.... This was our second stay in this flat for my husband and myself. It is located in the San Polo - literally steps from the fish market. It is a second floor, two bedroom flat, but the main bedroom has a wonderful queen size bed. The second bedroon has two single beds and there is a fold out sofa in the living room. Apartment has been completely renovated so all the amenities are great. We stayed in Venice for our full 10 days. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants to food shop and cook while in Venice. What a lovely way to enjoy Venice for 10 days - shopping for dinner as soon as the markets open in the morning, an afternoon prosecco on the campo, after lots of walking, a dolce and grappa at the end of the evening at Cantina do Spade. Even without our speaking Italian, the vendors in the fish, vegetable and meat markets were so very gracious. Our new discoveries were the wonderful pasta shop and the little wine shop where we filled our plastic bottles. It is definitely not the flat for someone looking for a quiet out of the way spot in Venice, but if one wants a central location, the closest access possible to the best fish, meat and vegetable markets probably anywhere (not just Venice) - a lovely fully functional kitchen - this flat is it. The kitchen is fully equipped and everything works - large by Venice standards - so don't expect a Viking range, but there are granite counter tops. There is 4 hob stove, oven, microwave, toaster, refrigerator with large freezer and dishwasher. There is also a washing machine in the bathroom. I recommend do a load before bed and the hanging on the drying rack in the morning. The "short" wash cycle is incredibly long. What we like about the rental is that everything is included. There is no concern about metered utilities nor cleaning/security deposits. Because our stay was more than a week they reduced the daily rental rate without our even requesting. There is no telephone, but a short term cellphone rental served us well. We have never been to Venice in the summer, so I am not sure how comfortable this flat would be in the heat. There is no air conditioning, but there are two large electric fans in the apartment. I would recommend taking a couple of recipes along for the local fish. It is overwhelming to be standing in the fish market and trying to figure out how to cook Seppia it its own ink. (Next time I cook it) Steamed clams made a great lunch one day and a roasted veggies marinated were our cicchettis for several afternoons.
