apartments on estate near Verona, Veneto WhenAugust 2001, 2 nights ReviewApartment Negrara. La Foresteria is the estate of Count Serego Alighieri, a direct descendant of Dante Alighieri. The estate has been in the family since 1353 (I think that date is correct) when Dante's son, Pietro, bought it. It is a functioning wine estate in the midst of the Valpolicella region in the western Veneto, about 15 minutes northwest of Verona - beautiful country. There are 8 apartments available of differing sizes. We rented "Negrara", a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment suitable for 3 people (it wouldn't work for 4 because one bedroom only has a twin bed). This apartment is on the second (top) floor and has beams overhead. If you are over 5'10", this can be a potential problem. All 3 of us are tall and had a number of near-misses as far as bumping into them. The apartment, however, is very nice. There's a very large living/dining room, TV, nice kitchen and the beds are good. The staff was very helpful and breakfast was served in a lovely courtyard. If you're traveling with children and like to have a pool during the summer, this might not be the place for you as there's no pool. There is, however, a little store on the property where you can buy products produced on the estate including quite good, well-known wine. We rented this apartment through Ancora Italia (The Brown Partners). Gay Greiter was lovely to work with. I think that it might be possible to rent apartments at this estate directly, but we didn't. From La Foresteria, there is easy access both to Verona (which is a GREAT city - if you've never been, I encourage you to go) as well as Lake Garda. We only spent one night at La Foresteria in August 2001, but I'd recommend it. The website says that rentals are nightly with a 3-night minimum. We only stayed one night and perhaps paid a bit of a premium, but it is possible. This estate also has their own web site: www.seregoalighieri.it This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
