1bed/1bath apartment in Pisa, Tuscany West WhenSpring 2004, 1 week ReviewI had the opportunity to stay at Behind the Tower during my visit to Pisa a couple of weeks ago. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to spend more time in the city than it takes to see the tower and get back on the tour bus. The owner, Gloria, picked us up at the airport and brought us right to the house. She was extremely helpful and gave us lots of suggestions for things to see that we might otherwise have missed. The house itself is modern, comfortable, with a brand new bathroom with shower and a well-equipped kitchen, which, despite the fact that there is a large supermarket literally just around the corner, I hardly ever used. There are so many charming little restaurants nearby that we almost always ate out. The house is right near the centre of Pisa. You can see the Tower, Bapitistry and Basilica from the bedroom window and a five-minute walk is all it takes to be standing under the Tower. The rest of the city is quite walkable and definitely worth exploring fully. There is a daily fruit and vegetable market in the heart of the old city. We found a great little restaurant there, Il Campano, which I heartily recommend. For you gelato lovers, the best place to get ice cream in the city is the Bottega del Gelato in Piazza Garibaldi. There was a line-up out the door into the piazza of students waiting for a cone! If you want to get out of the city, there is a bus right across the street that took us straight to the Central Station. After only an hour on the train we were in the centre of Florence. All in all, a nice place to stay and to use as a base to see the city and some of the other sights nearby (Lucca!), especially if you come in to Pisa on Ryanair as we did.
